we all know that good mic tech is parramount to a good vocal performance but how can this be discribed and what exactly is it. apart from pulling back from the mic for loud bits and getting closer for the quiet bits . what else is there to it how can I/we get a good take out of a singer ,keep them comfortable and minimise the amount of processing we have to do .Call me lazy but if i can get them to do more work I should have to do less and that means less stuffing around and better sound ,dosn't it?

Hey Rocky.
I'm fairly new to recording myself. Just laid my first track today. Haven't done any vocals yet, but I did read on another thread that a screen is helpful. You may of seen them. Kind of a light cloth shield between the vocalist's mouth and the mic, to keep the 'P's and 'T's from blasting out. I plan to use it when I do the vocals. That and a decent mic.
I don't know what ya mean by 'stuffing'.
As for keepin' the singer comfortable, remember, your a team. He can feel pressure just like you, or the other guys and it affects everyone. Work with him and be postive. Negative crap is a waste of time unless delievered in a good way, like constructive.
Wish I could tell ya more, but,,,,,,,,,,,.
Good luck.

Oh yeah, use a preamp on the mic. It sounds so much better.
