DJ University :)

Hey did you know that there are DJ schools in japan. That's nuts. LOL

I think thats taking the fun out of it. Meaning how can you develop your own style and skill with someone instructing you. A real DJ is made when they make and mold themselves. NO DOUBT

Does anyone agree?????

Hey did you know that there are DJ schools in japan. That's nuts.

I don't think that the idea of a DJ shool is nuts. I've seen one in every country I've been in (sorry about the preposition at the end of that sentence  ).

H*ll, I'll probably start a school here in chicago around the beginning of the 3rd quarter of 2002.

A lot of these newer dj's do not have the basic skills of dj'ing, let alone any idea of how or what they should be doing to create and improve these fore-stated skills.

Where do you think "slamming" came from? And before that ... the "back-spin". It started because they didn't know how to blend and they didn't know how to "hold" a blend.

When I was in Paris, at the DMC shop all the DJ's there at the store gave private dj lessons to people who wanted to learn how to mix @1000 franc per hour ($200.00).

Meaning how can you develop your own style and skill with someone instructing you.

You are just learning the fundamentals of mixing (dj'ing) (I'm talking about HOUSE MUSIC). In terms of Hip-Hop, you are learning that AND the basics of the more complex scratches, beat juggling etc.
Most people will develop their own style of combinations and techniques (if they are innovative :) ).

(I started mixing way back in 1982 (there weren't any dj schools at that time).
Everything I learned, I learned on my own.

I would also like to mention that I would like any and everybody get a "step ahead of the game" (that's why I posted the link. I thought it might help somebody
:)

The link I posted was just some reading material to the DJ's of this forum. I saw some very important things inside that site.

For example, It stated some things that I had to learn the hard way, like.... "spliting the crowd" when you're spinning at a club.
The average "new" dj would think that he/she is doing their job, by having all the people on the dance floor.
But, in reality, if everybody is dancing, then the bar (read OWNER) isn't making any money.

At the beginning of the night you want to watch the crowd so you can play the right music for them.
You also have to play good music to keep them there at the club so they don't leave, but you don't want to play too hot, because you don't want them dancing yet, either.

Another point I had to learn the hard way, was... ALWAYS play for the WOMEN, f*ck trying to make the "hard legs" happy, make the women happy.
You have to remember that men are nothing more than "stimulated dummies".
If the women have a good time, they'll come back (and with more girlfriends).
If there are women at the club, the guys will come in droves, and they'll spend all their money on the women at the club, by buying them drinks.
If the men are spending money at the bar then the OWNER is happy, beause HE/SHE is making money.
If the owner is making money on YOUR hot night, then you'll be making money and YOUR night will be safe.

good link spin keep em coming

Thanks DJ2422 ;)

peace out, guys...

Hey spin, where do you shop for vinyl here in chicago?

Well I feel like an Ass HAHAHAHAHA!!!

Well I must say you have really broken it down. :)
I understand alot of your points. No Doubt ABOUT THAT.
I was just basically saying that I learned my mixing skills and Scratch Techniques on my own by watching other DJ's, Practicing Like crazy and reading up on it.

I guess I like the idea of figuring stuff out on my own. I have always been like that. I like to teach myself how to do things. I can understand now how some up an coming DJ's would need some teaching on blending and other basic stuff. But I never had that. I learned the hard way, with no assistence or guidence. But I am happy I learned that way. I have my own style of doing it

I'm an All around DJ. I Play at the hottest club here where I live,
I do Private partys, Public Functions, and Radio Appearances. I'm a producer of currently 4 solo acts and two groups. I learned how to play Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, Piano and how to use all my other Production equipment by myself.

Once again It was just better for me to teach myself the in and outs of being a good professional DJ. If theres kids that want that guidence. Then more power to um. Naw Mean :) Theres nothing wrong with that at all.

I was just saying that in japan they have schools for DJing like Us in America have colleges for Higher Learner. Does that explain what I was saying a little better???? :)

Hit me back Spinsterwun. Thanks for the reply :) Holla

I agree with you Tony...

... I always prefered to learn on my own. I always had to learn on my own (While I'm no dj) I learned how to make beats by myself. Like you said, when you learn by yourself, you'll have your own style... Sure, there are always some influences in your music but while I don't listen much to music (Only on my computer and in my friends' cars) I really have my own style...

Also, I don't know if you're like me but I don't like teaching...

Anyway, my two cents ;)

if i could have learned the basics of scratching and blending and any of the other terms that you are familiar with that makes me scratch my head i would have been happy.

a couple years ago, i went from playing guitar only to playing keyboard and bass, and got good enough to play each live, but i never could get the art of scratching down. i'm not talking about DJ'ing, i'm purely talking about scratching and beat juggling/munging whatever it's called.

if there had been a class to just get me to the point of being able to add a scratch here and there, or loop a beat, i would have taken it.

i know that you can loop a beat sample in sonar, or fruity loops or whatever, but it ain't the same as a DJ any more than the guitar patch on my roland is like a real guitar.

there is something in the hands that gives it that extra oomph.

being from the chicagoland area i go to another level, superdance and mix-a-lots, i've been to supreme a couple times and also hot jams, but they are kinda far from me. i don't really have a favorite i just usually go to mix-a-lots cause they are really close to me. and as far as dj classes are concerned. i have taught myself everything i know about spinning. none of my friends spin and i never really spin with anyone else. have been doing it for a year and i think i would have progressed alot quicker if i either spun with someone with expirience or took lessons. especially since i had zero musical background to start it took me a long while to teach myself beat counts and matching beats, ohh well i have fun doing it thats what matters right?

Most of the records, that get sent to me, come from the record labels national office or their regional office.

If I buy records in Chicago, I'll get them from Hot Jams, Supreme, Grammaphone, Hot Jams, Track One, Beat Parlor, Georges Music Room, Hi Fi, Second Hand Tunes, or that place on 87th street (I forgot the name of ther store :( ).

In Paris, I get my recs from Vibe Station or Le Favela Chic.

In London, I get them from Deal Real or Oingo Boingos.

Peace...

DJ Tony MOMO, I can tell by your energy and the wording of your posts that you are a proactive individual. :)

I can also ascertain that you are also an innovator and a go-getter". ;)

So please, don't take the post I made, "to heart", in a negative light.

Most DJ's that excel are "self-taught".

peace, my brother.
