i only record vox so 1 input is really all i need. i've been using the m audio mobile pre usb interface and i'm sick of the hiss i get from the preamps whenever i use a dynamic microphone! (all i use are sm58's and sm57's)

what is the cheapest upgrade/solution i can make to my interface to get some decent preamps for my dynamic mics? or would i be better off just buying a cheap condenser?

Yes, buy a condenser microphone which you need anyway for quiter acoustic sources. Something like the audiotechnica 2020 will be a great value.

i was told by a friend that 100 dollar vocal condensers aren't worth it..(but what does he know) i would strongly prefer if someone could recommend me the best way to get a decent gain from my dynamic mics without the crappy hiss from my current interface :( the sm 57 just "fits" my voice .. but if i'm going to have to spend like 1000 bucks then i guess i'll have to try a condenser

how about this http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/-X2u-XLRtoUSB-Microphone-Adapter?sku=580350

will the gain be clearer/better from that than with my mobile pre usb ?

For that price, I strongly doubt it.

I feel your pain. The preamps on my Presonus Firebox hiss like crazy if I try to use a dynamic mic for vocals.

I'm pretty certain the cheapest route for you to achieve hiss-free vocals is an entry-level condenser mic. If you want a good-sounding preamp that has enough juice to push a 57, you'd better be ready to spend some cash.

I've heard a lot of talk about that DMP-3 preamp being a great bargain... can anybody comment on whether or not that unit has enough clean gain to record vocals with a 57?

I started with a mobilepre usb and I sympathize with you. I generally advise people to work with what they have but I think that has got to be the worst interface ever made.

If I were in the market now I would look real hard at the presonus firestudio mobile. It has high gain preamps and is expandable. Should have plenty of juice for your dynamics.

Do a search as I'm sure there's more out there with higher gain pre's. I've been happy with my firepod for 5 years now. That's why I recommended the presonus.
