But this was a live gig? Wasn't it? Why would you re-track a live gig?

Ah. I missed that it was a live gig. I was assuming that they were tracking in a studio. For a live gig, I'd have probably used a stereo pair, and used the close mics only for bringing out solos and fixing balance issues.

You didn't read thru the thread, eh? I detailed the mics I used, the setup I had them arranged in and even drew a diagram.

Well done on taking this on!! Sounds pretty good for a one shot take. Did you get asked back?

Thanks. I did indeed get asked to come back - They really liked the recording and the next one will be better, as I learned some things from the last session. The next performance is this coming sunday. :D

When I get the "go ahead" from the band, I'll post links to the final mix so you guys can hear it.

Are you going to add a room microphone(s) to this recording?

I was thinking about switching all the instrument mics to dynamics, save for the piano, which I'll keep using an SDC (or two) for. I'm of the mind to make the singer use one of the M3s, for added clarity and reach and then use two LDCs as room mics. Whaddya think?

I like it! But maybe not an M3 on the vocals ..... ya got a Beta 58 or 57?

Nope but I wouldn't mind owning a Beta 57A. I bet that mic would be awesome for recording live vocals in a situation like this. For now, I'll look into renting one.

I think a condenser is essential for recording this particular vocalist; The singer, although good at what she does, is not the best at "working" the mic. She often holds it very far away from her mouth and her vocals get lost in the mix, leaving me to automate the crap out of the track. Frankly, I'm not getting paid enough for the work involved. heh.

I like to use a Beta57 on drummers who sing - less bleed of the drums into their vocal microphone. But if she holds the microphone away while she sings then a Beta57 wouldn't work as good as a regular 57 for they are great at off axis capturing of talking or singing.

Maybe you could on your end turn her up, or a different preamp, or if your good at it use a compressor and it's make-up gain then into your DAW.
