So I recently purchased a NADY RSM-2 for 200$(shipped) brand new off ebay. I always hear how ribbons sound so different.. and are a really cool addition to any studio. My friend who i always record with came over and we had a little jam.. i just threw the ribbon on a mic stand about 5 feet from the drum kit and the amp and we decided to go at it. I had never used a ribbon before.. and i dont have a particularly amazing signal chain.... ribbon mic.. to an aphex 207 preamp into an edirol 101 firewire unit.. all rigged with mogami cables. In a totally untreated crappy basement studio (cement floors and less then 7 foot ceilings) I am just blown away by the natural sound of the mic.. especially considering its a 200$ mic made in china.. im just gonna throw a big long clip up .. just goofing around... tell me wha tyou think.. im not crazy about my guitar sound.. in the first place.. my amp needs new tubes... anyways .. feedback...it starts with acoustic.. then ther eis other electric. here is the link. oh yeah there last little clip of guitar has a shure sm7 in the mix a bit too. http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/file.php?fid=2725

I like!!! Good groove going there at the end... I'd like to hear that as a song with a bass in there somewhere... Keep it coming ...

ribbon mic

that riff makes me wish i was 100 years old, but the mic sounds great.

For real! The guitar did too... I even liked the beat and guitar playing of the first over the second... :p

Ditto to that.

To me the drums are sort of a poor man's Bonham. I like that sound. Of course, I am 100, give or take.

of course those drums sounded better... they are a pro mixed and recorded loop.. i just wanted to show the feel of the ribbon.. the guitar was recorded with the ribbon on both clips.. but it was just noce mic in the middle of the room on the second part.. i thought it was impressive

well, there ya go!

I could tell it obviously had a lot more work done to it than just throwing up a mic (oooh, that's gotta hurt)

What was the drum loop? I might have to get that.

The right ribbon mic can certainly be the thing on a guitar cab. This past weekend I used an SE R-1 ribbon and an AEA R92 ribbon. They were extremely complimentary to each other. I thought the R92 a little more raunchy and sort of put out a Malcolm and Angus Young vibe while the R-1 put out a Roy Buchanan sort of vibe.

AC/DC & Roy Buchanan in the same sentence...........

Awesome!!!!!!

Oz you are alright by me! ;)

How do you rate the ribbon against the sm 57.

I recently purchased the sm 57 because everybody was saying how much it rocks.

More natural sounding. Smoother and not as peaky. At least my Beyers are. Can't speak to Shiny Box and the AEA products, but I expect a similar response.

I posted the wrong clip completely.... here is the real one.. duhh... sorry im an idiot.. im ok with you hating on that clip.. that clip was nothing.. http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/file.php?fid=2732

You know, the only thing that really stands out to me about that clip is how good the bass is reproduced on the kick drum.

If it were me, I would probably give that mic a permanent home ... about 4-5 feet in front of the kit (or wherever it was you had it placed - I'd definitely dampen that room for the sake of the cymbals, though). Or I'd do the tunnel thing on the kick drum and put that thing out at the end of the tunnel, and mix it with something like a d112 up close.

But that's just me thinking out loud.

.

yea, i was debating getting a cheap ribbon but after hearing that clip its going to the back of my to-do list

thats what i liked about it.. was the punchiness of the drum sound.. not so much the guitar sound.. thats actually where i plan on using it.. mostly to get the kick.. i dont know.. i thought it sound good considering its just one mic picking up a room...

my guitar amp sound like crap.. because i need new tubes really bad... im not happy with my guitar sound with any mic..
