Give me your reference list for hard rock/metal...

For crazy insanity hardcore, Converge "Jane Doe" is about as abusive as they get. It's a good reference.

For the poppy rock stuff, I really like Weezer "Pinkerton". It's not "the best" by any means, but I think it sounds great. The massive drums, HUGE distorted bass, yet still very clear vocals.

I didn't list albums that I personally thought were the best albums--we are talking about reference. Not many people want to sound like "In Utero" but a helluva lot of people want the sonic punch, transparency and power of "Nevermind".

Personally I prefer the sound of "In Utero" but I don't get to determine what my clients like. Sometimes bands will want that rawer pro sound, and sometimes they want it polished.

If you ask me it is more challenging to get a polished raw sound than a slick polished sound. The reason why is you have to leave stuff alone more than you are used to--and the band has to ROCK. Last time I checked most bands are pretty average and unable to rise to that challenge.

In some ways I think people confuse "good albums" with "good sounding albums" and they are not necessarily the same things. I think the "Black Album" (Metallica, not Jay Z) SOUNDS great but it isn't a good album--most of the songs are filler or just plain bad.

For example AIC's "Dirt" is a good album, but in my opinion it doesn't sound very good.

hey guy...in utero is a wicked sounding album! it actually sounds real....y'know, like an actual band actually played everything

you sound more like you're a fan of...pop-rock...aren't you?

I know there are some poison cd's in your collection, aren't there? be honest..

LOL. Funny. I always thought my music taste was pretty bad-ass, then i realised that THAT DON'T MEAN SHIT. take your teenage angst somewhere else... It's pityfull. I like phil collins more then i like Slayer. Both are in my record collection. But then , i like hocico more then i like Nirvana. Go check that out. (i bet you like blink182! :p )

Phil Collins is a badass. Anyone that says differently is silly. That guy had almost a 20 year high profile music career and has written so many good songs its ridiculous... plus he's a great drummer.

Thank you.. Your taste is simply great

G. *ismaking a list of people with good taste*

teen angst? lmao...what do you call it when you're not a teen anymore?

I'd rather listen to phil collins than slayer any day of the week...though i haven't really been into his newer stuff...

in part i think my musical taste is so bad it's good...

eminem, snoop dogg, prodigy, bjork, nine inch nails, portishead, moby, bathory, korn, system of a down, corey hart, nirvana, kmfdm, dog fashion disco, green day, tool, vanilla ice, david bowie, orgy, randy travis, weezer, the cars, sum 41....and yes..blink 182 as well (good call)

..and i will agree with the comment that metallica's self titled album is basically crap..highly polished good sounding crap....

LOL In the words of another poprock band

mid

Crisis

And you better be joking about my msuical taste... Whenever someone lists sum41 and blink I immediately put them on my "willing to listen to any turd by any asshole " list. Yes I'm fond of lists. :D

the rest of the band si list are pretty much what I like too though.

Motley Crue - Theatre of Pain

REM - Green

DEVO

It all depends on what I'm doing but for me personally, AIR is important.

sum41 and blink182 is my soundtrack of choice for a drunken summer day....when you just feel like getting stupid....stupid behaviour needs stupid music...

as for any serious artisitic integrity...well, i'm not sure, but i think having a number in your band name might automatically disqualify you...

I prefer LinKin Park for modern sound. And besides that, their albums which were mixed by Andy Wallace are very difficult for me to imitate them.

well DJ Ack, let me be the first to teach you that the sound of linkin park is not that good. Sure, you may like it and it has it's place . But imho rock or metal is not supposed to soudn like that. I wouild like some sonic space when i listen to music..

@Glimmerdoll;LMAO :D

SERIOUSLY listen to the DEFTONES albums. The producing in them are fantastic. More white pony with the added effects during songs or at the beginning of songs to make the album something different rather than just 12 songs (or how ever many) played start to finish. Listen to how the overall sound is really meaty but the guitars havnt got much bottom end. The bass guitar is quite prominent and takes use of the empty bottom end space. This gives a wickedly meaty sound and brings the bass and guitar together (if the bassist is any good). The snare sound is perfect in my idea of snares. really snappy and not much actual snare sound. It really stands out in the mix as does everything! The snare sound is mostly to do with the snare chosen (dont know what it was, but would like to know) but also to do with eq and compression. I think ALOT of compresion was used on the snare!
Use any newish (adreniline , white pony etc) deftones album as a refrence for mixing.

for more modern rock sound, check the mixes of Any Wallace.

For a vintage rock sound, the first 3 Led Zeps and Jimi Hendrix' stuff are a great reference for me.

Musically he is.

Sings, plays drums, keyboard, writes great songs, has tons of top 10 hits, platinum albums.

If that isn't your description of a badass I don't know what is.
