Hello, all...

We just posted another song from our first CD.

This one features the vocals of a girl-buddy of ours. I wrote this song for her about 5 or 6 years ago.

The song was recorded on a Korg D8 with sub-standard cables and mics, and mixed on a cheapo bookshelf stereo system.
(....it's all we had to work with at the time :( )

The song is called "Not The Same Me"

Here's the link....

Any commentary would be greatly appreciated. ;)

Not the Same Me

I just listened to this one ...

great lyrics ...

the only thing I noticed, the voice sounds old .. like you recorded the instruments after the voice .....

but I love the song .. it flows great !!!

good stuff ...

Lana,

Hey... thanx!

As for the vocals sounding "old".... that was because we used sub-par mics and cables.
That'll kill ya every time.

Glad you liked it, though. :)

I'll give your tunes a listen when I get a chance.
(...my baby is asleep right now ;) )

Again.... Muchos gracias

Buck

I guess the rest of you guys didn't think too much of this one, huh?

Hey Buck. I've always liked this song musically. The rhythm reminds me of Skynyrd... a good thing to my ears.

The vocals, you've already stated the sub par mics you were using. It'd be interesting if you could get her to sing in that big ass tube mic that you have now... What was it again? (that's not a euphemism) :)

2Mac's leads are flowing and right-on as usual.

The drums are the thing I'd really like to hear different. The snare to me sounds a bit loose, and I don't hear the kick drum at all.

but definitely, to me, this is a good song.

Well, the guitars sound great - good balance and EQ. I especially like the glassy, really 'pick heavy' acoustic in the background. I agree with Teddie about the drums. The toms sound really dead (like they need to be tuned better) and the snare needs more snap. The bass seems to have some problems. Certain notes seem to really get lost - could be an EQ problem. There is a problem at about 1:08, too as the volume seems to drop out. Maybe you were trying to cover up a bad note or something. Oh well. As for the vox, they don't bother me as much as everyone else. There is a sort of harsh reverb or delay on them in the right side that is distracting though. The song has a cool vibe and sounds pretty damn good for sub par mics. Later.

I thought the acoustic guitar sounded pristine!Nice tune. The
vocals weren't really what I would want to listen to,but thats just
a matter of taste.Nice work!

Guys...

Thanx much for out this song and I'm extremely glad (and relieved) that you guys liked it! :)

I typed out long individual responses to each of you, but this computer is screwed up lately and it keeps timing-out over and over again.... I have to reboot after only 5 or 10 minutes on-line. :(

I agree with your assessments of the recording itself, especially on the drums and bass.

I was really happy to see that y'all liked the guitarwork, though! :)

That's what we concentrate on the most, since were just 2 average guitar players trying to write some decent songs.

I hope this reply goes through.... the last two tries didn't work.

Thanks again, guys!!!

Hey Bucky!

Checked out the tune.
I agree with the Drums/Bass issues, but I also thought that the Vocals sounded very thin.I don't know if this from the mics, or if the singer just has a real thin voice. If her voice is thin,I would double the vocal track for a little more punch.
I thought the Acoustic Guitar sounded nice & percussive-sy(?)
and the Lead Guitar was excellent, very fluid & flowed in & out of the tune very well.

Over-all, a great recording.

Dougie...

Thanx for the compliments on the guitars! :)

I agree with your comment about the vocals sounding "thin".... that's because we used an AKG C3000 with a Peavey P.A. head as a preamp. The C3000 is a bit harsh in the upper-mids to begin with, and using a P.A. head as a preamp is just plain, uh... well, let's just say we were rookies at the time. ;)

The reason the acoustic sounds somewhat percussive is that I play with a heavy pick. If you listen to the song "Angel Child" on the same page, you'll notice it even more... but somehow it fits, I guess.

The lead guitar part was done with the POD.

I teased my partner because I thought the tone sounded like those recordings you hear of whales talking to eachother. :D
(.....if you heard it again, I'm sure you'd agree!)

Thanx again for checking it out...

Buck

Great song. Your stuff is generally up there on the quality scale anyway.

I noticed the same two issues as mentioned by others. Vocal sounds "separate" (although the performance was fine) and the drums, in particular the snare, sounded a little "thuddy" (is that a word?) - of course this is coming from a DR-660/Fruity Loops user. :)

Excellent work - I'm not mentioning the guitar parts until I get my own act together - other than they exude taste.

not the same me

I really enjoyed the song. I also thought the guitar gave the song a Skynyrd sound. I won't elaborate on the 'seperate' sound the vocals had, but the singer herself was great. Very good song, great performance by all.

Buck, great job as always. As psmith said, your stuff is always pretty great, I really liked this one a lot.

I listened to this song in Lo-fi and as a download, as an experiment. Woah, did I learn a lot.

Buck, I have some questions for you, but to avoid the dreaded "double-post", I am going to start a new thread in this forum called " A bunch of Questions", or something like that, will you please check it out?

Great stuff, as always, Dave

...guys, GUYS!

Thanx alot!

I kind of expected to be ripped to shreds over the recording quality (...and deservedly so), but it's nice to hear that you guys liked the song itself. :)

I really wish we could have done this song justice with the proper equipment.
Unfortunately, the Korg D8 we recorded it on was sold months ago... so remixing it is impossible.

To see comments like "great job as always" and "Great song. Your stuff is generally up there on the quality scale anyway" makes all the hard work worth the effort. :)
Believe me when I tell you that we have to do lots of takes to get our songs sounding tight without losing their feel.

It was also tough to get the singer in a groove, since she'd never recorded in a studio and has been singing Karaoke for 10 years.
There were a lot of habits that had to be broken and she drank my entire bottle of Southern Comfort during the session!

Anyway...
We still have another 5 songs from the first CD and a couple of new ones in the works that we'll be posting soon.

Thanx again! ;)
