Hi Ray...I am doing good. I hope you are the same......man, I have listened a lot with this one.
All the layering of instruments, make it a bit more intricate listening material.
The first four measures remind me of Floyd's 'Hey You' ...but I think on the fifth measure you hit a chord that turns it around to 'your' song.(I think Floyd went 8 measures before a chord change).I haven't heard 'Hey You' for ages....so I am most likely way off base on this.
Right before Terry sings, it takes another chord change and the only reference to any other artist to my ears, would be at 1:58 to 2:17, where the flute brings Moody Blues to mind.
I like how the first and second guitars are left panned in the intro, and seem to stay there, yet when one listens closely, realizes they are center-left panned. You have done the same with the bass coming in at 00:05..which sounds a little high end to my ears, and I like it for this song.
That second guitar (I love the slide effect)...panned left coming in 00:01 would seem to be a uneventful timing ..but that one tiny one second, makes a big difference in the layering build up.
The third guitar right panned at 00:10 adds another layer. Is that guitar the first left panned one, but timing offset...or a whole other take?
Sounds like a Mandolin in there backgrounding here and there...?
I also like how the bass(00:33) sets off to introduce the Cello's entry at 00:39...and I love the bass step-downs..00:38 to 00:58, during that part...sounds cool. The Cello adds a sweet melodic low end in just the right places, giving the song a dramatic effect.
I guess the Cello would be considered the lowest of the low end in this song...eh?
At 1:09 to 1:22, the emotion runs high with the Cello....makes me shiver.
Ray...does it seem that the guitars are eating up the space, when the cello kicks in....around 00:46....with the vox to you? It seems a bit busy-little muddled there.
1:01 to 1:09 the Cello seems a bit back. I had to strain listening for to it until 1:10, when it went up an octave...? There are parts I am unsure, if it is the bass being subtle or the Cello playing. Whatever, I love the sound.
The melodic guitar picking is great !!
I like your quick yet subtle layering of the instruments as it progresses.
I would love to hear this with drums of some kind....if only in choice places...such as maybe some tom rolls at the build-up releases...and some kind of assorted percussion fills here and there.
The outro with the guitar picking...the vox...the haunting flute....the down-stepped Cello(almost sounds it is going off-key)...is awesome.
I may have some of the times backwards. I lost what I originally typed and was in a hurry to re-type trying to remember my words...I am getting listening fatigue.....Oh the typing errors of an idiot...
