GIMLI'S LAMENT w LYRICS - draft

Hi Ray...I am doing good. I hope you are the same......man, I have listened a lot with this one.

All the layering of instruments, make it a bit more intricate listening material.

The first four measures remind me of Floyd's 'Hey You' ...but I think on the fifth measure you hit a chord that turns it around to 'your' song.(I think Floyd went 8 measures before a chord change).I haven't heard 'Hey You' for ages....so I am most likely way off base on this. ;)

Right before Terry sings, it takes another chord change and the only reference to any other artist to my ears, would be at 1:58 to 2:17, where the flute brings Moody Blues to mind.

I like how the first and second guitars are left panned in the intro, and seem to stay there, yet when one listens closely, realizes they are center-left panned. You have done the same with the bass coming in at 00:05..which sounds a little high end to my ears, and I like it for this song.

That second guitar (I love the slide effect)...panned left coming in 00:01 would seem to be a uneventful timing ..but that one tiny one second, makes a big difference in the layering build up.

The third guitar right panned at 00:10 adds another layer. Is that guitar the first left panned one, but timing offset...or a whole other take?

Sounds like a Mandolin in there backgrounding here and there...?

I also like how the bass(00:33) sets off to introduce the Cello's entry at 00:39...and I love the bass step-downs..00:38 to 00:58, during that part...sounds cool. The Cello adds a sweet melodic low end in just the right places, giving the song a dramatic effect.

I guess the Cello would be considered the lowest of the low end in this song...eh? :D At 1:09 to 1:22, the emotion runs high with the Cello....makes me shiver.

Ray...does it seem that the guitars are eating up the space, when the cello kicks in....around 00:46....with the vox to you? It seems a bit busy-little muddled there.

1:01 to 1:09 the Cello seems a bit back. I had to strain listening for to it until 1:10, when it went up an octave...? There are parts I am unsure, if it is the bass being subtle or the Cello playing. Whatever, I love the sound.

The melodic guitar picking is great !!

I like your quick yet subtle layering of the instruments as it progresses.

I would love to hear this with drums of some kind....if only in choice places...such as maybe some tom rolls at the build-up releases...and some kind of assorted percussion fills here and there.

The outro with the guitar picking...the vox...the haunting flute....the down-stepped Cello(almost sounds it is going off-key)...is awesome.

I may have some of the times backwards. I lost what I originally typed and was in a hurry to re-type trying to remember my words...I am getting listening fatigue.....Oh the typing errors of an idiot...

I always enjoy listening to your stuff Ray. I love your penchant for layering of sounds and your use of timing in doing so.

Kudos to you Ray...Terry...and Meriam.

I`m loving this.

It stars very floydish I`m thinkin Hey You, but differnent in its own kinda way.
Later I feels as if it reminds me of tubular bells in a way specially on the first encounter with the flute.

Its great hearing 70`s music, this sounded very true, very quality prog as well.

I really liked the lyrics for this, and they you sung them in a suiting relaxing kinda way.

This stuff is top notch in my book

Thanks for sharing man,

Thanks for the suugestions & critique folks.
I have a few things to dothanks to your detail - particularly from True (thanks HEAPS for the excellent commentary) - I was going to wait for the final vox to come through but will get to & fix what I can in advance of that.
The principal influence on this - esp the intro - was Bo Hansson's Music Inspired by The Lord of The Rings. It gave me the impetus to write themain body chord progression in 1976. I came up with the intro after hearing the same album again some time later. I'd not actually heard that particular Floyd track until after david K mentioned the similarity. Probably heard it at a party or in an altered state without knowing it though.
I'll start playing around in the next day or so as I'm on V A C A TION for a fortnight.
