Gibson SG-12 string

I asked Gibson Custom Shop for a price to make an SG 12 string 3 years ago, the price was $5000. I am glad I never followed through with that. I had bought a Rick 360/12 instead. Well last May I got an e-mail from Gibson that the SG 12 was being produced, I immediately put the Rick on e-bay. The SG 12 string is just what I needed and at $1469 it was a reasonable price. I was a bit surprised to see there was a PC board and plug in pick up connectors in there.

What's the PC board do? Just plug-in connections for the pups,pots, etc, or are there any un-used connections/spaces on the board that would suggest possible future upgrades or add-ons? IMHO, if it's just there for existing connections, that suggest that Gibson used the board to cheapen production cost, but if it is possible to add stuff (on-board effects or tuner, MIDI stuff, etc.) then there is potential benefit to the buyer.

The PC board replaces the traditional point to point wiring. The pots are soldered directly to the PCB. I think as usual they are doing this to save (make) more money. I dont think there are any extra connections. I will try to post a picture.

It was a work of art, I am just a Gibson guy. I couldnt get used to it. I would have kept it if it was in the budget.

The molex connectors are an easy way to snap the switch and pickups into the circuit without waiting for the worker to solder the wiring together. My Epi Les Paul has these connectors and I haven't had any problems.

Yes I was pleasantly surprised, It is supposed to be the 50th anniversary limited run. I wonder if they will keep it in production and what will happen to the price.

Getting rid of your Rickenbacker 12-string in favour of a Gibson? I don't get it man.
What kind of music do you play?

I'd pick a Rickenbacker, Vox or even Fender over Gibson anyday, especially as a 12-string. But well, a matter of taste I suppose.

I play "Classic Rock" but my influences vary from John Denver to Black Sabbath. I was fed up with Gibson in the 90's, I had a lot of problems with them. But in 2001 I bought a Les Paul Classic that was flawless. I now have 6 Gibsons that are just as nice. I could not get use to the Ricks neck, too narrow. I dont like the octave strings being second of the pair. Restringing was a nightmare with the fragile tailpiece. It felt uncomfortable to play. I dont like the conversion varnish they use, impossible to touch up dents properly. It also sounded just too bright. The only thing I liked about the Rick was its heritage.

Well, that's interesting. Haven't been a fan of gibsons recently to be honest. Like you said VP^ had a lot of problems with them and know people who have absolute horror stories.

Yes they may be going downhill again like the 90's.
