A friend of my friend has a gibson marauder and well, I was just wondering what do you guys think about them. I might be able to get it off him cheap and if I do, the pickups and the tuning heads need work and a couple other things. Does the gibson marauder have a good sound (better sound than perhaps a epi les paul)? I havn't seen the condition yet but also say what I should look at when I do see it!

Check the condition of the nut and check the action - play each fret individually, listen for fret buzz.

Is it worth considering though? I was told it is a lil beat up and needs pickups replaced. What should I offer for it as a base line starting price.

Why would the pickups need replacing? Are you sure its not a wiring issue? They look awesome, but they're pretty cheap guitars. I'd get one for the look, and perhaps how it sounds and plays depending on this particular one. How much is he looking for? A few pretty big bands lately have been playing them, which has driven the price up. Its got a bolt neck, something to consider maybe?

Here's a gbase search for marauders:

$850-1350

I'd rather have a 70's tele deluxe, but the headstock is pretty badass on the marauder.

I didn't realize the price had gone up so high on those. I bought one in mint condition in the Gibson hardshell case for $100 at a yard sale about 10 years ago. I didn't like the maple neck at all. I guess I should get it out and take another look at it. :)

Those guitars were pretty crappy new, and a nice one today is still a POS.

Those were the 'beginner' Gibsons. Not complete junk, but close.

Paul Stanley used to break one in every show for a few years in the 70's. They were pretty disposable.

Agree 100%

An average Epiphone LP is WAY better............
.....as are just about any of the Korean glued-in neck guitars these days.

I knew a guy back in high school that had one of those-and I agree that it was not a very good guitar, playing or sound wise. I had an Ibanez les Paul style with bolt on neck and it was a lot better all the way around-still not as good as a set neck though IIRC.
I do believe they were all bolt on necks as well-so I agree the Epiphone would be a better guitar.
