I'm feeling unusually whiney today, so I think I'll unload on all of you good people. The MR8 has been a good introductory tool, but I am TIRED of its limitations and inconveniences.

  1. The screen is hard to see, unless you build an angled shelf for it..
  2. the effects suck
  3. the pre's suck
  4. the headphone amp sucks
  5. the buttons suck
  6. the inability to record all 8 tracks individually pi**es me off
  7. the flash cards (though they've FINALLY gotten cheaper...) are too expensive and inconsistent
  8. My pussy hurts (as jake would say, sorry if that offends anyone... :D )
I'm seriously considering ditching the idea of getting the e609s, and buying an audiophile 2496 instead.

Feedback on this GREATLY appreciated!!!

Sorry for ragging...bad night...

That's why I went PC to begin with so that I wouldn't have a $1000 box that was obsolete.

I have a US122. My upgrade path is FirePod then FireFace.

There's no "I've always used a PC because I saw those problems coming" choice.

Luckily I didn't spend that much on the MR8, but yea...

How does that usb interface work for you? I've heard good and bad about them...

Do you already have a firewire interface on your puter? Is that a PCI card?

EDIT** missing choice in poll-well I can't think of everything!

The USB has been fine for me. I've seen a lot of posts to the contrary, but people who don't have trouble don't post.

The firewire would be an add-on. I'd get a faster PC in there, too, but that's throwaway hardware.

I voted that I hate daws. I got rid of the mr-8, and went to an adat setup. I know its obsolete, but I love it!

I am going to stick with the little red monster until it dies, then it's going to be a massive upgrade: Fully functioning studio with an analog console, into an HD24, and all its bells, whistles and knobs and buttons and a pretty girl to bring me coffee (and nothing else, I don't want to wake up minus Mr. Winky)....

I don't own a little red beast but I do have a Zoom colored 10 track beast that i'm selling and i'm going go computer. I have a Firebox coming my way and I just bought a mixer. I like the silver thing but I want to be able to record a drum kit and maybe a guitar track at the same time so I need to be able to do at least 4 tracks in one go. The Zoom could only do 2.
I do stay up late at night worrying about latency. I think I have enough computer power so it should work out.

Latency issues can be fixed, as I've seen from the many who have overcome on this board...

BTW, every time I see your avatar, I have to go pee!!!! :D

What are you getting?

I had my laptop already, I bought an Echo Indigo pcmcia card and used it for a couple of weeks and it worked pretty well so I thought why not go with something with more recording channels so I sent the Echo back and ordered a Presonus Firebox. I also just got a Soundcraft Compact 10 that arrived yesterday.
I may hold onto my Zoom 10 track for a bit. Had it up for sale but the only bite I got was from some guy trying to scam me. Get this, after a couple of emails with this guy he says the price for $350 was cool and asked if a money order was OK. I told him that he can send the money order and when it clears I will send the unit. He then tells me that he will have is own company Apex Logistics pick it up. I tell him that if that's how he wants to do it I'm cool with it. Here's where it gets stupid. He emails me back saying that an associate who owes him money is going to send me a money order for $2000 and I need to go to the bank and cash it, take my cut, then wire the rest of the money through Western Union to his company.
I replied by forwarding all of the emails to the FTC and copied him on it. The way this works is the bank discovers in a week that the money orders are bad and you are out $2000. The guy picks his cash up at Western Union, probably never picks up what you're selling and gets away clean.
Needless to say, I still have a Zoom MRS1044 to sell. ;)

That wasn't an ebay deal was it?

I have a disdain for that site....

No it wasn't. I put it up on a site called baltimorebands.com. They have a gear exchange section. I also had it for sale on another forum for bass players, talkbass.com. I guess this clown finds gear for sale in a certain price range and tries to scam us dumb musicians.
I guess what he doesn't realize is that most of us musicians are poor and very protective of what little money we have to spend on gear. ;)

Some of us have less than others.... If it weren't for gifts, I would still be recording 4 track instrumentals and not learning anything... :o

mr8

Edwonbass, nice to see a Baltimore neighbor in here. I'm in Middle River Md. about 30min. north of you on 95. I, like most people went through the initial disappointments when first using the mr8. In my opinion the mr8 on it's own is nothing but a glorified 4 track. And it's not marketed that it should be used in conjunction with a pc,mixing software, to get better recordings. Wav manager is not mentioned in the manual anywhere either. I've had mine for a year and a half and have made some decent quality cd's and never had problems(knock on wood). And it's portability is a plus and easy to use. You'll pay just as much for pc interfaces, upgraded sound cards and still need to use preamps/mixer for direct pc recording as you would buying a bigger cf,mixer and software for the mr8. I find that pretty much all musical equipment/instruments are way overpriced especially when most of the people buying the stuff are working stiffs doing music as a hobby. And the assholes who sell the stuff I find hard to believe that they are musicians too.But maybe that's just my personal experience. But like another post said.it'not so much the gear,it's the knowledge of the user. The mr8 is a nice unit and perfect for someone starting out in multitracking instead of 4 track cassette. My two cents Pj

yea, but even cheap 4-track cassettes have tone controls, at least. But as a 4 track it's a good start. The problem is that if you are starting out it is unlikely that you will be able to get all of your eq from the source, like a lot of experienced people can, and even then, you need to do some adusting, that's the main problem with it, they could have done without the amp modeling, mic modeling, cheap effects, lost the mastering gimmick and just had a 3 band eq, even w/out sweep, that would have made a lot more sense and it would probably have been even more popular.

hmmmm....................

e609s....audiophile 2496

audiophile 2496....e609s

I don't know what those are, but I wonder if the Zoom 8 track thing has eq?
