No, I'm wondering about being able to monitor recording directly to PC, through an audiophile 2496. Judging from Richie's response, I've overlooked something obvious...

An MR-8 + PC software is a good combo to produce recordings one track at a time. For many home musicians with guitar and vocals, this is a very low cost way to produce very good recordings.

I have had no problems with my MR-8 and the USB interface works fine for me.

The only glitch I've seen so far with mine (and others on this board will back this up, it's happened to them) is the fact that every once in awhile, the damn thing takes forever to actually go active in the usb mode. My pc will recognize it right away, but the machine itself sometimes takes a few tries to go active in the usb mode. It's not something that happens all the time, but it seems common to other MR-8's with or without the upgrades installed. I think it may be the next thing Fostex has to address...

IF I see that, i usually just unplug the USB cable, wait a few seconds, and then reconnect. It usually comes up quickly A variety of USB gear sometimes shows this beharior.

weird man..never had that happening...but then again, mine is practicaly new..still, hope it doesnt happen.

Mine did that a few times when I was connecting a Win2K machine... I just figured I was getting in a hurry, and getting out of USB mode and then back in usually took care of it...
But when I went to XP... I couldn't get any kind of formula to get it recognizing the MR8 on a regular basis...

I've pretty much just done away with the USB/Wave Mgr routine now and am utilizing a Card Reader...

Works like a charm... Every time

:)

Like I said, it usually don't happen very often. Most of the time it's because I had the machine on for awhile laying tracks, and it does get warm after it's been on for awhile. If I slow down and let it cool off before I connect it to my pc, that doesn't happen...

Another glitch I had, though not very often is that when bouncing down tracks after I transfer them to pc so that I have a guide track, it sometimes starts skipping after a couple minutes into the bounce. It's only happened twice during the whole time I've had it, but I suspect the CF card may be the problem...

I've had the first (USB recognition) problem may times, still do. Probably due to all of Bill's shit I've disabled.

Have bounced on MR8 maybe 3 times...

I do it for every song. The first 6 tracks are the meat of the song for me, so I bounce them down to use as a guide track for the rest of what I am going to put on there.

I've only had that problem twice, like I said. The first time was before the 1.20 upgrade, and then a couple days ago (which is why I posted it now). Maybe the card is wearing out, it's been in there a year...

hmm, could be.

If I recall right, they have a finite amount of read/writes...

99?

That's all!!!???

I'm sure mine was in excess of 1k.
WTF? It wouldn't take long at all to hit 99...

Shit, nevermind. I was thinking undo/redo. I must have passed over 1k write/rewrites....

Damn... I can't find the little booklet that came with my CF card.

Don't quote 1k, because I'm thinking it was even more than that... but.

It does seem to be yet another downside...

Yeah, well... I am just starting to fully integrate all my recording gear, so I am not going to down it yet, but I know that I will want to upgrade eventually. I still don't have a need for recording more than two tracks at once (I do have the mixer, so even drums will get mixed to a stereo track on the MR-8), and right now it's recording just fine. I have the process down to a science almost (if my playing and singing were up to snuff, I'd be great), and I learn more and more everyday.
All in all, with all of it's downsides, it's been a really great learning tool that I am not quite ready to give up! :)

no not direct to pc, but i just ordered a pc i could afford, if it's no good for editing, then i'll have to settle for noisy drum tracks, but i'll still record on an all-in-1 either the red or the blue.
