Hello Everyone,

I've recently decided to begin building a home studio. I have a new computer with (I think) a good sound card. I don't have nor play any musical instruments. The idea is to create or sample some 'beats' and instruments from recommended software and cut them together with my own recorded voice. What software is recommended to get things started? What hardware is recommended (ie. mics and do they hook up directly to my computer)? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Tyler

Stock sound cards are somewhat cheezy but may be ok for starters.
Perhaps fruity loops would suit you best...loop based software easy to use. You will need to invest in CD sampled loops which can be costly for quality.
I descent mic for vocals ( audio card questionable for mic recording)

What "good" soundcard do you have? If it's the one that came with the PC, it's unlikely that it's good.

Software to look at would be things like Fruity Loops that was already mentioned. Acid and Kinetic are two others that might be good. On the higher end, Project 5, Reason, Ableton Live are all good software packages.

As was stated, your stock soundcard probably won't give you very good results recording vocals. If it's all you have then do the best you can. Get yourself a (decent) dynamic mic, stay away from condensor mics as these require their own power to work, and have fun!

If you "think it's probably good" it's NOT good. :)

Technically there aren't many good soundcards out there. RME Hammerfall is good... but it's still 600 bucks.
