Getting started..and i think im going crazy.

hello, recently my band mates had to go to college. i pretty much made all the music and lyrics though. i kept trying to get other bands with friends together but they always break up after a couple months. so iv decided i dont want to be in a band, and i think i never wanted to be in one in the first place lol. i just want to be able to record music myself.

-so the last couple days i have been looking around for what to do and i started downloading programs off the web. i got cakewalk sonar 4,guitar tracks, kinetic, cubase 3. i dont really know what im doing. i just want the best program to record. in order to get better advice i guess ill tell you what i want to do.

i play guitar and i am into punk/harcore music. i cannot play drums but i used to come up with the drums in my head and relay that to my drummers. so i need a set-up where i can just play my riffs. but make the drum track with a program or drum machine.

i have 2 identicle three month old computers with-
Sound blaster audigy 2 Zs.
Amd 3.5
1g ram

money is no really a factor with bittorrent and all. so i really need advice on what kinda set up would be best for a guitar player making 4 instrument type music. i dont want a program to make a drum tracks for me. basically i just want the drum sounds and to be able to mixx them and lay them out how i want.

someone help me im going crazzzzzzzzzzzzy.
 
Stay crazy. We don't tolerate pirated software on this forum. There are legitimate avenues for trying demo software. If you pirate, stay away from HomeRecording.com.
 
...... punk and hardcore drums are hard to produce on drum machines (to me anyway) cause there are so many drumming changes....but if you want to do it bad enough you can create each part of it. try www.flstudio.com good demo version...keep meaning to buy it but havent just yet. i basically make the beat. turn it into a wav. file and take a screen shot so i remember what the hell the beat looked like. but for the low low price of $49 bucks you can have their cheapest thing. i think its fl express. i use sonar 3 producer edition. alot of the multi tracking software is user opinion based. i started on cakewalk so i think its the best. i know people that started with pro tools so they think its the best. the same with cubase. you can buy a keyboard with drum synths and do drums that way or buy an mpc (expensive). but if you're going for just you recording. i would suggest the audiophile 24/96 soundcard. its made for recording. a yamaha mg10/2 mixer ($99.99 new), some monitors (not computer monitors. monitor speakers) and a couple of condensor mics(mxl 67g) and dynamic mics(like the sm57). effects and all that are up to you. plus you'll have effects plug-ins on whatever program you use. i agree. stay crazy. when i get a grip and realize I may never hit it big, that will be the day i sell my recording equipment and get a 9-5 job and marry some woman I'll divorce in 3 years.
 
While you're at it, break into guitar center and steal a new Gibson Les Paul :rolleyes:

Many folks here (myself included) develop software to feed our families, so we don't like folks stealing our living. I realize you just started college (about as far from the real world as possible), but try to get some morals before you graduate. I see sooooo many folks who think they are entitled to other peoples' work (see how many folk steal mp3s off of whatever spyware infected site of the week?). I would think musicians would be immune to this mindset, but sadly they are not.

Au contraire, rumble. When you realize you will never hit it big is when you can free yourself of fantasy and delusion and really get down to making music. Thirty years ago I had dreams of making it big. One day I realized that was not gonna happen, so I went back to college, got a 9 to 5 job, and married a woman I divorced (after 7 years). Now I'm married to the right woman and spend most of my free time making music, and I've never been happier!

And... I'll just add my voice to fraserhutch and gordone: mackayormacky, you are going crazy because you think everything is free. Do it right. Research your options, save your money, and buy tools that you can afford. Often it is our constraints which enable us to achieve creativity.
 
im sorry if i offended you guys by saying i download programs. but i really dont need a moral lesson from you people. you have no idea who i am or about my life, nor do i know anything about yours. if you have never ever downloaded a song from the napster or any of the 1089701 other programs out now, then go right ahead and bash me. but you probably have enouph money to buy a cd where as i have to think about buying a snicker bar everytime i go into the store because i might not make rent.

-i just wanted advice on what equipment is best for me wether its $1000 or $200 i dont care. again im sorry if i offended anyone.
 
...I'm 24..i fall right into the age range of the people that stayed up all night downloading songs. the same people that said "F the government!". and part of that group switched to kazaa after napster died. boy those were the days lol. but i ended up buying cds so i could hear how much better they sounded. mp3s are great..love wav. files though.

Prioritize. I did.

I write software for a living. I don't give it away for free. That you cannot afford the software (at this time) gives you no right to pirate it. There are enough entry-level applications that are cheap enough for you to be able to afford them. But no... you want THE BEST, but are not willing to pay for it. That is theft.
 
well it may be time to give up this thread and start a new one in a couple of days. once the software writers get a hold of the essence-o-pirating posts, its doomsday.

ask for prices and opinions on software. if you have it and dont have a watermarked reciept signed by the store manager, it may be best to not explain how you got it. there were posts here about if people paid for expensive software and boy did the words/fists/shoes/shit start flying. don't ask - don't tell - don't know :D
