Magic Bag Of Sounds
how would i do this? any tips? i tried doing a gate plugin and it ended up sounding terrible :( eq only goes so far and its not helping me get a decent bass drum sound.

I have been working on the same problem as I have just started to record drums. So far I found the best way is to get a heavy blanket(i'm using a sleeping bag) and make a tunnel in front of the kick drum head. This should keep some of the snare out. I don't think you want it to touch the front head.

I have to ask, what problem is this generating for you? Is it just the fact that it's there or is it phasing or something?

its already recorded, its more of a mixing question. the problem is that it sounds like crap and when i try to give the bass drum some punch it ends up overpowering my already recorded snare track. i guess i just need another mic to pick up the impact of the beater

my guess is that you're either recording with the kick mic way out in front of the kick, or you're adding a ton more click than you need to.

unless you're using your kick mic as a room mic,the bleed from the snare shouldn't be a problem at all. if you are using the mic as a room mic, yeah you'll have to get another mic if you want to add attack without bringing up too much snare.

how are you micing the kick?

If it's already tracked and redoing it is not an option, put a volume envelope over the kick track and hand "duck"the snare bleed. It's time consuming but it's the smartest gate you'll ever use. :D

I'm no recording guru by any stretch but when I record drums, I'll solo the kick track and erase anything that's not a kick. Be sure to start your edit after the decay of the kick. Same thing on the snare. It'll have a little longer decay. I'll leave the 2 OH's alone as they'll have the HH, crashes and toms to fill out the "room" of the kit. This, too, will take a little time but I get a much tighter sound.
Just a peso or two.....Hope it helps.
