Hey guys, I'm getting ready to place an order. Don't have time to do a search. What's a good set of 5 string bass strings? Round wound or flatwound? Give me some suggestions please.......

You probably want ROUND wound. FLAT wound are completely smooth.... more like a jazz player would use. Not as loud and less attack.

I just got a set of Elixer strings. The nano web coating makes them slightly less squeaky. About $40.

I use D'Addario's more than anything.

i only play dr's on my bass and guitar, last forever and sound amazing. if you want to shell out enough to buy the elixers or something of the sort, try dr strings, ive found they last just as long.

DRs are exellent guitar strings, so I don't doubt that they are exellent bass strings.

I use Elites Stadium Series Standard V's (130 105 85 65 45) on my Warwick Corvette Standard V. They are roundwound stainless steel strings. They cost about £15. I use Elites on all my basses.

I found a review on the web which described them as "Solid, warm fundamental -Ringing harmonics, but not annoying -Bright, deep slap sound -Warm fingerstyle sound, bites back when you dig in". I'd agree with that description.

They may be hard to find outside the UK, but are well worth checking out.

The absolute best strings ever hands down are Elixir. You absoulutly have to try them. I tried them once 4 years ago and will never buy another brand of strings. Bass. acoustic and electric

One opinion. My opinion is that they suck big monkey balls. It is true that they sound the same for a long time. Unfortunately, they NEVER sound good. They never have the brightness and brilliance of a conventional string. We don't even sell Elixirs, because we all hate the sound of them so much. If someone brings them in, we will of course put them on. We will not buy them, however. If you really want to use a coated string, you should try the D'Addario EXPs, which sound almost exactly like a normal string, close enough that I can't tell the difference.

The biggest problem, with both the EXPs and the Elixirs, is that they cost more than twice as much. For me to justify that expense, I would need to get at least twice the life out of them. In my (limited) experience, they do not last twice as long. I just don't think they are worth it, even if you like the sound.
