Getting ready to buy a digital multi-tracker

I'm getting a little older and the days of rocking in bands has pretty much passed. I have to find an outlet for song ideas, but I also don't have a lot of money. I also don't have a ton of experience with recording, but I do have enough to use a digital multi-tracker. So, that's what I've decided to get. I'm shopping them right now. Wondering if anyone has one of these machines and/or can give me a review and some advice. I'm really looking for an "all-in-one" machine since I don't really have any other gear at this point. So, I'd like to have built in effects, amp modeling, drum machine, mastering, and CD burning. I'm looking at the Korg D12 or D1200 (anyone know if the D1200 is worth the extra money?). What about the Boss BR-1180? Those are the two I've looked at most carefully. I'm thinking about getting one used from eBay. Any advice? Thanks, PJ.
 
How comfortable are you with computers?
 
I'm very comfortable with computers, but I would need to buy a new one along with ProTools in order to go that route. I have a PC, but my wife uses it for her business at home. I would love to go that route, but I don't have the money right now. Maybe in a couple of years when our computer needs upgrading. I'm planning to get a Mac then, and I could probably get set up. Thinking the multi-tracker might hold me over until then.

Don't forget the Yamaha models: 2816, 4416, and their very popular AW16 -- the 16 model has a site started up by someone who used to post here and it is a very good information site.

I think that all of the major models, Korg, Akai, Yam, and Roland, the SIAB's that do it all produce very good work.

Learning curve? Well, I went through a couple of 488s by Tascam, a earlier 4-tracker by Yam, and an MD8. These all gave me a good background for the 2816, plust all the help I got here.

But, after a year or so, I'm still learning the 2816. All of the models that do the CDR and CDRW have a similar operating method. Right now, I think the Korgs are pretty neat.

Since you say you've been around a while, you'll notice I didn't mention the new Tascam SIAB -- it has a "small" screen and I like the big screen better--easier on the eyes.

Since this is a major investment by you, my big suggestion is that you go to a major vendor and preview the models. Some folks take a trip to Sweetwater in Indiana just for that purpose. Then, you can decide. BTW, don't forget monitors--they really help mixing a good product.
