Getting an M-Audio 2496 to work in a Dell Computer

you need a new cable- one that has 2 rcas on one side to plug into the soundcard. the other ends needs to have the type of connector to plug into your speakers- probaly an 1/8" mini trs (stereo) jack- i dont think you have one speaker that is louder than the other- i think you have one side that works and another that doesnt! if you have a digital camera sittin around you could take a picture of the speaker input connector(s) and post it and we could probably tell you exactly what you need

I went to Radio Shack and bought their “Y-Adapter Audio Cable” So now, the single line that WAS connecting the speakers to the soundcard with an RCA adapter on it’s end now has another adapter with two RCA connections that connect to the 2 “outs” of the soundcard.

In other words, the speaker line going to the soundcard first goes to an RCA adapter and this goes to a Y-Adapter (RCA adapter) that goes to the two outs of the soundcard. I thought this would solve the problem but one speaker still lacks volume. It made a little difference in the way it pans, nothing even worth mentioning, but things still are’t right.

My Soundblaster arriveth yesterday! This might be a good time to open up the box.

And by the way, I spoke to a guy from “Sonic Implants” today about their Symphonic Strings. Besides being expensive, he said your computer needs 2 gigs of memory. 2 gigs?? Are they crazy?

I believe it is, it has the 2 rings around it.

My soundblaster is here and waiting for a chance. I'm in no hurry to install it.

3 contacts right? a tip and 2 rings- commonly refered to as TRS- Tip Ring Sleeve

Nice picture Jeff. That pretty much looks like what I have. I took some photos with a digital camera. I’m not sure if I’m doing this right, but I’ll try to send one along. Anyway, if it comes across, the green plugs are the same. The green plug in the foreground connects to the speakers. I have other photos.

I finally decided to throw in the towel with the Delta 2496. It just wasn’t working out. It did the same thing in the Dell that it did in the Gateway. One speaker just wouldn’t work right. I’ve discussed this matter before in other groups like rec.audio.pro for one (a real good and very active newsgroup by the way). One person called it “the sound card from hell.” I know the card is working because it’s the second one I’ve tried and the first one did the same as the second. It’s time to give the Soundblaster Audigy a chance. I just installed it and both speakers are working fine. I know it isn’t a very popular card but the idea of trying soundfonts for the first time has me feeling excited. It’ll take a few days of playing around with the new SB before I can develop an opinion about it. I just hope everything works out alright. I hope it changes how I feel about the average person doing home recordings on their computer. It seems to me that the average person isn’t ready for it or maybe it’s more accurate to say that it isn’t ready for the average person. Maybe I'm wrong to say this but that's the way I see it. Recording on a 4-track was so much easier than this, but I’m looking for better recordings, and that’s why I persist.

maybe im just a computer guy- i had a mini disc 8 track - i hated it- pain in my ass- computer recording, to me, is sooooooo much easier- but then again- i use use a computer at least 40 hours a week for a living- my computer is my friend- to each his own... keep tryin- for me using the computer has zero learing curve- im very familiar- both with software and hardware installs- but it wasnt alway like that- you gotta learn sometime
