Want me to check my local hardware store? I could send you one for actual cost (less than $10 including shipping) I'll cut the tab off. :D

Nah. Actually, I tried this last night. Maybe I just need to cut it down more. I think one of the prongs is too small, so I may have to enlarge that too. :)

Sounds like you are on top of it. For the one that I got I only has to cut off the tab and round the corners on a belt sander. It was an easy fit.

citizenkeith, I don't have good ones left, got a shipment from Japan but were made so cheap so decided to toss them. :(
I have located a new source with heavy duty connections and 11 feet long, waiting for these to arrive, probably after the holidays. :(
You can modify a appliance cord, be sure you don't break the male connection as some has a very tight fit.

Thanks guys, I got an appliance cord to work.

I've checked out the machine. I cleaned and demagged it. I was able to record on every track but #4. Also, when playing back a 2-track tape in 4-track mode, I could listen through outputs 1-3 only.

What are the most common causes of this?

Also, the pinch roller doesn't move up very well. Sometimes I have to push it up a little for it to engage playback.

Considering the above problems, how much would you pay for this machine? It looks pretty clean.

Lastly, a kind person is sending me a replacement record head... for free. I was googling the 3340S, and came across an early December post at Audio Asylum from a guy offering the free head. I contacted him, and he still had it! It's currently on its way. :)

Tracks 1 and 3 are the same thing as your left and right playback tracks for a pre recorded 4 track tape.
if there is music on the whole tape you might fast forward to the middle of the tape and see if you get music back wards on tracks 2 and 4.
Or just fast forward the tape all the way to the end and turn it over and play it back and see if you get music backwards on track 2 and 4. That will tell you if it is working in play mode on all tracks.
When you tried recording on track 4 did you use the mic in or line in? If you only tried one of them you might try the other input and see what happens there. If you are using the mic ins you might try using a q tip to clean the mic inputs. They can get corroded and need cleaning over time. Also the switches on the head stack can need cleaning also there you would need some spray cleaner for those. You will need to take the head cover off to get to those.
Good luck with your machine

Thanks Herm. Duh, yeah I just tried the mic inputs. I'll check out all the line inputs and outputs tonight.

Like Herm mentioned those switches behind the head-cover can create the problem with loss of channels, check all those thin wires soldered to the small pc-board there so they are connected.

Good Luck

Still nothing on track 4.

I tried the line input last night. Like the mic input, no go.

That's next on my list. Thanks guys. :)

I forgot to mention that the red record light on track 4 didn't light up either. I mention it because it could be a clue...

Any thoughts on the stuck pinch roller? I have to push it up to play and record, push it down when using fast forward or rewind. Sometimes it moves on its own, sometimes it doesn't.

Pinch roller. Check lubrication. The roller arm and solenoid should not be gummed up with old dry gook. It should move freely by hand. You will need the back off and the power removed (no killing yourself) to poke at the solenoid with your finger.

That the record light does not light could indicate that the light is burnt out. Easy to test with a volt meter (compare working to non working lamp).
Could be that the switch is not working. Compare working to non working again.

Or, that the control electronics are not working. No easy, one paragraph fix there.

It's enough to get me started. Thanks!

BTW, I'm in the middle of scanning those manuals. Hopefully I'll be done soon...
