My vocals are getting a mid range push that is difficult to find (trying to eq it out)
My questions are
1) Could it be the weather, room or other physical conditions
2) Is proximity effect a mid range issue
3) Can it be fixed or should I re-track
Signal chain includes toft atc-2, Focusrite VMP
Mics include, NTK, AT 3035, 4033, GT MD1b (tube abd FET) various and sundry others

Possibly -- do you find your voice often changes according to varying weather patterns?

No - proximity effect affects bass response (in a late-night-FM-DJ kind of way!)

Possibly -- try another singer??? :p (kidding.....)

Try different mics, different ambient spaces... if you're getting the issue in a relatively dead room, then it could be mic selection/signal chain/your voice or a combination of all three.

I hate to say it . . . but if it does the same thing with all of your mics run in to all of your mic pres, then it's probably either a characteristic of your voice or your monitors. Temperature and humidity play relatively small roles -- unless of course you're recording under extreme conditions; something not particularly common in the midwest. :D

There was an interesting discussion not long ago on tapeop about how air pressure can affect bass response, but to my knowlege, that's much more an issue for those either living in the Rocky Mountains or Death Valley.

agreed. i believe that horrible tone you are hearing is your voice (freed from sympathetic vibrations of your skull and other factors that cause you to not hear your own voice correctly while you sing). i say this because i have a horribly nasal voice that i cant hear till it is recorded... so i know where you are coming from.

Found it! It was only happening on a couple songs that have a certain note that my voice hits really hard. Once I upped the compression ratio and threshold and sucked a little 500k out of it, cleared up! Thanks for your input
