Here's a tune recorded more as a little demo

I think this was mixed a little hot, and i think some of the tracking might have been a little hot too as some parts seem to distort a bit.

Is there anyway to put a little compressor in my signal path to record with a touch of compression? i feel like some of these are a little wild, and i really dislike the compression that comes with cubase.

SIGNAL PATH: All guitars were recorded with a couple naiant mics (one up close and one about 10 feet back as a bit of a room mic). Vocals were through a Sure KSM32, bass was into a Behringer Bass V-Amp. Everything was run straight into my Presonus Firbox and into my mac powerbook into Cubase LE

Good song, only thing I noticed was the volume for the main vocal track was
wavering, is that the compression you were talking about? Maybe get a different plugin, or get hardware and send it from mbox back to mbox? Never used that one before so I don't know for sure.

The overall track is loud but distortion isn't that noticeable.

thanks...

there's actually zero compression or any type of effect on anything. that's why i was trying to figure out how i could add compression in. i've tried the compression that comes with the cubase and it makes it sound REALLY weak and thin (assuming i'm using it right).

thanks. i know the basic principles of compression. i'm just wondering if, or how, i'd put a compression insert in as i'm recording...like using a separate box like an RNC or something.
yup, there's a bunch of different compressors you could use. i've never used a rnc, but from what i've read it's a pretty good buy. but i don't think that was what was wrong with the tracking of this vocal. it's probably tracked too hot (i heard it clip a couple times). Did you use a gate? maybe that's what's giving it that wavering sound that someone else said (i didn't really notice any wavering though).

now that i think about it you probably track hot so you could get a fuller sounding vocal track right? if that's the case i'd say compression won't solve your problem as well as a better pre amp would.

sweet! thanks for the feedback.

do you have any clue how i'd actually insert the compressor into my signal path? i'm kind of under the impression that the Presonus Firebox does not allow for any insterts, but i could be wrong. i guess i could always get a little pre/compressor and then run in through the Firebox, but i was more curious if anyone knew how i could get a compressor to work as an insert with the firebox.

I like it.

What I'd do, aside from the above, is lock the figure in the bass drum and string bass so that the hit the same punctuation a lot more. The mid and top is artfully spazzy, so I think an inderlying , more solid foundation would support the top in a positive way.

Not saying they should be locked completely...but this is a circumstance where that might work best of all. The string bass notes, without accompanying bassdrum hits get lost...have 1/4 the impact and strength to add to the groove that could be had.

thanks.

i'll give some of this stuff a try tonight. i'm not planning on actually keeping the bass or the drum loop as we've actually got a drummer and a bass player, but i can't resist trying to do my own thing with the tunes as i'm writing them.

i also realized that i recorded some of the tracks a little to hot, so i'm getting some clipping. mostly in the guitars, but a little here and there in the vocals.

i'll try and repost.

cheers!
