here is what I have,
some sm57s, an sm58 and some sennheiser 825, 835 and 845s.

I can't get a decent kick sound. how should I place them.

by the way; I have an old tascam portastudio I use asa mixer-preamp. as you see, I'm too deeply stuck with bad equipment... how can I use it best?

The Red Hot Chilli Peppers used an SM57 or SM58 for "Suck My Kiss" on the kick. I tried it with my SM58 and it really sounds pisser. You need to cut a hole in the front skin and put the mic inside. 6-10 inches from your beater.

In a Pinch

If you are really hard up and in a pinch, find and old speaker and wire up a mic plug to it and put it in front of your kick (DO NOT run phantom power though). treat it like any other dynamic mic. It actually doesn't sound half bad and will work probably better than the sm57 or 58.
I forgot to say, a speaker out side an enclosure (or with the back off) actually works better than a sealed box because it takes less energy to move the voice coil when it isn't in a sealed enclosure.

Alright buddy. 3-6 then.
Hey - stick the mic inside your bass drum. It'll sound good.

what kind of a speaker would do better? about what diameter and what ohm? may a small computer speaker do?

(i don't have any phantom power anyway, as I said, just and old porta-2 preamp and mixer)
by the way, I tried almost everthing with the sm's maybe I must get a fine mixer.

As always...are you sure that it is your mic's problems you can't get a good sound? How does the kick sound before you mic it? An SM57 should be able to provide a passable sound on a decent sounding kick.

Try using your 57 and put a chair in front of your kick with a blanket draped over it and place your mic just under the chair away from the kick You can get a deep cannon sound from you kick without expensive kick mics.

kick mic

I go with Mountainmirrors just stick it in the kick drum that is what i do with my Audix
