I just tried it. The mount for the MXL-990 DOES work well on the TLM-103. It does not clamp to the body, but to the large ring that seperates the body from the grill assembly. It holds the 103 very snug, and I wouldn't have any worrys about using it, even inverted.
My only concern is that there are no stops available with the Neumann body, so that a heavy tug on the mic cable COULD pull the mic out of the shock mount. Locking the mic cable to the stand would eliminate that one concern.

Excellent, Harvey , you always come through. Well, since the shockmount has a free mic included, what can you tell us about the mic? Is it a keeper? Good room mic maybe? Ebay fodder?

Well, I had it all set to go on the stand and ready, but there was a change in how they wanted to record the song, so I ended up using it as a talkback mic for the drummer which didn't tell me anything about the mic.
I'm gonna be recording some female backup vocals for the song tomorrow, so I'll give it a workout then.
But this weekend went well for getting this one song close to finished. For those of you interested in this kinda thing, here's what got recorded:
Kick - D112
Snare - SM-57
Hi Tom - M504
Mid Tom - M504
Floor tom - AT Pro 25
Hi Hat - SM-7
Over heads - MC012 wcardioid caps
Bass - DI into Great River MP-2NV
Clean Electric - Marshall - Beyer M260 w/DX mod.
2x Dist. Elect - same.
Lead Guitar - same.
Acoustic Hi-6 - T.H.E. KP-6M
Vocal - MXL-V69 w/RNC
Whisper - same.
Strings - Roland Sound Canvas - MP-2NV
Eq was used on the drums. HP filter on vocals above 50Hz. Nothing else was used during these tracking sessions. All the mics went into the board's preamps.

Hello Mr. Gerst, I'm curious what kind of board you use, as I thought all the pros used stand alone mic pre's
At least thats what I've been led to beleive. When do you use the stand alone units. And one other question if you don't mind. I have been recently
"enlightened" to the fact that board "buss's" are not routinely used, because of summing amp noise. I was told to use direct outs or insert outs. I cannot as the mixer I have only have insert send/returns, but I use an MSR-16, and would not have anyway of setting levels. Besides, that tells me that pros such as yourself indeed do use the board channel pre's, as you just said. Do you use your buss's for tracking, or direct outs? Thanks

This session was tracked in the big room, using an MCI 556D console (accepts up to 56 channels, but shortloaded to 48 channels). It has 48 direct outs, plus 32 buss switching. The big room is set up to normally handle 32 tracks (4 DA-38s), but this session will wind up using under 24 tracks.
The small room has a 32 x 8 Soundtracs Topaz. We normally use 24 channels and use the last 8 channels for dedicated effects.
If there are a lot of drum tracks, we may use the busses to keep the mix balance intact and throw effects across the busses (compressing the drums for example).
For most things that we do, the board's mic pres work just fine; for a few mics, the outboard pres are used to get that last little bit of sheen or bottom, or for a better impedance match. We're fortunate to have a couple of nice consoles with pretty decent preamps built in.

Check out Tensimount - I came across them (either here or on another BBS) - they looked interesting, and so I bought a couple to try them out, and was mightily impressed by their construction and their ease of use - so I bought some more, including the "Big Mike" (!) adapter, and was still impressed. For the price (~$15.00), I don't think they can be beat! They adapt to a standard mic clip, which makes them very flexible and very easy to use.

For isolation the tensimount simply cannot be beaten for the price. If you need isolation get it. you've already got the mic clip. Just slip it in and you're good to go. I've bought 3 of them so far.
