IMHO
c7sus:
well, both...
The mistake is not to ask what is he trying to do...
and I think thats why you ask me that.
when I think in homerecording, I think in how to mic and rec the drums, cause I think is the bigguest challenge to rec, including what gear to buy:
choose the mics (that gonna be used in other instruments too); how and what technic to use for micing; rules of phase and all that threads; how to use my ins and outs of the mixer or soundcard: compressor, eq and all the other settings, and another things, concepts, etc.
I think that if you can do it well with drums, you can do it well with everything else, using technics like the 2 mics for the guitar: sm57 infront of the amp and another condenser mic about 6f behind.
I dont have a lot of money to buy the best gear out there, but I think first exactly what I am gonna do and use it, and buy things like sm57 mics for snare, guitars, or anothers, and audiotechnica condenser mics ($130 - $190) or so... (what about an A-T pro25 for kick?, $104)
BUT, BUT, BUT, if he is doing electronic music, and he has all kind of softwares including REBIRTH and all that stuff, well, maybe he just need 1 or two mics, and a little mixer for preamp, and that was my mistake, not to ask what is he trying to do, --->
---> and thats why I recomend him read the links above, to understand the basics and know exactly what he is trying to ask us... besides, everybody needs to know the basics.
with just one mic in the drums kit, YES you can record it, but I know it can be better. 3 mics for all the drums, maybe can be the BEST, if you know how to use them.
so, do your searchs, you will find your answer and another very important threads...
cheers.
