As this is the official mix contest thread I'd find it cool if we could have some discussing going on. I'd like to discuss what folks are mostly struggling with and if they found a solution – if other mixes or comments helped to get advanced. I read some had problems with the drums, the vocals, the lowend, etc ... I read a lot of visions what people aimed for style wise and I heard what came out. Waddaya think... cool to discuss or boring? Lets face it most mixes won't win a flower pot, there are just too much mixes out there (although I read that some have already shared some prices :D).
I think beside winning the golden guitar cable this is a great opportunity to share some knowledge, vibe, skills. Hey we are talking about an eight track recording, I mean 8!

A lot of post goes like: "How do you like my mix, comments are appreciated" welllllll how do you, I mean you yourself like your mix compared to what is released (professionally)? Discuss! Cool?

Cheers,
Andy

That's the cool thing about this kind of contest is that there is not one right or wrong way to mix a song like this. There are lots of possibilities both for the mixer to put his or her own thumbprint on the song and for the artist to see their art presented in a way that they may not have originally visioned it:)

Amen to that! :)

I tried to go the "originality/creativity" route just simply because there were so many other good mixes that were a more standard (and probably best) approach to the song. Just thought I'd have fun with it a bit:p

Man! Make your mix downloadable!!! It's part of the rules!!! It would be a shame to disqualified just for that!!!

Wow... I didn't realize you had to specify that! I just assumed it'd be downloadable. Thanks for the heads up!!!

What really blows is that I did my mix, uploaded it and then.......nothing. I forgot to add it to the group. Oh well. It's not like I can't live without more gear. It's been online for a week already but I forgot to add it to the group. Doh! Never really expected to win anyway.

Ha! That's exactly what I expected from you! Playing guitar with a violin, pah!!!

Just kidding! Love ya bro!

PS. Please no mouse jokes!

try to share it still.
If Im not guessing wrong, the date of your mix in the gearfest group will appear as the date when you uploaded your mix to the soundcloud.
hope it works!

Well, this is what it's all about, really, isn't it? Sure, you can sit around waiting to win & hope that people post "teenage girl" comments on you mix ("I love your hair" "No, but I love your hair") but if you really want to actually improve, you've gotta spend time listening critically & commenting intelligently... I'm not talking about trash-talking everybody - Picking out the good points & making comments on what needs improvement with suggestions - according to their perspective & intentions, hopefully.

I dunno... I mentioned the lack of critical comments on my mix and was accused of only mixing for the approval of others so I kinda gave up.

Big snare sound, clear mix, interesting guitar approach. Pretty cool all around!

You are approaching the mix with a quite straightforward idea. It sounds very like the on stage sound the musicians would be hearing, everything can be heard and you would be a happy player with this in your ears.

I know all of you have probably heard 200 mixes at this point, but if you have a second, please check out mine and leave feedback. I'm looking for constructive criticism so I can get better. I really enjoy this contest and wish you all the best of luck!

Clean, clear and individual in the approach. I can hear everything without it being harsh. Personal taste... the snare is a bit boxy for my preference.
