The entries to this contest are growing like weeds. it will be a monumental piece of work for the judges to sift through the masses. Good luck to all and please comment if you like.

I think Fab will be fair in his selections....but with so many entries, it may be a couple thousand entries by June 1st, I'm thinking he has to have a trusted team to go through and weed out the "really bad mixes" just to keep his selection process to a couple hundred that made it past the first line of defense.

Nice mix. Powerful bottom end. For me personally the bass and drums overpower the guitar. Would love to hear this mix with a punchier in your face guitar...but then again, I am a guitar player...

The OH track has a weird phase relationship between the right and left channel indeed. If you looks at the recording session video, you would see why, the mics placement was pretty unusual.

EQ will affect even more the phase relationship between the drum tracks. The trick is to EQ the drums the 3 tracks playing at the same time. If you EQ track by track you may and probably will get some phase cancellation on some frequencies.

my trick about the overhead track

first, i separate the stereo overhead track into LEFT and RIGHT channel, because i want to try to balance the low freq level between the LEFT and RIGHT overhead track, and i notice that the LEFT overhead had more bass than the right

second, after the low freq level quite similiar, i mix them again together, and using NI DRIVER to make some artificial low freq between them, and notch some low mid freq to give room to snare

Somebody suggested to phase align the overhead track. When you delay the right channel about 27 ms the snare will be centered and the phases seem to align much better.
 
Mixing intentions: "Showcase-Progressive" (Intimate but not monotonous)


Here is my mix. I wanted to break the trend, big reverbs and wide visual plane. Criticism are welcome.

Is anybody keeping a log of their favorite mixes? I've listened to a bunch of these things and they really start to blend together! There are some unique mixes, but I'm not sure they are right for the song. I'd be curious to see what some more experienced ears have picked out of the chatter. What have you heard?

here's mine btw...critiques welcome. So far the critiques I've received have really helped me improve my mixing skills. Thanks

I made my mix influenced by the sound of Sound City Studios,simple approach,with little equalization on the drums,vintage sound.

So many mixes to listen to. The judges have a tough time. There's no way they can listen to all the mixes all the way through in the time allotted to judge. The marking matrix would be interesting to understand.

It would also be interesting to get an analysis of different DAW systems used, popular effects (plugins and outboard) etc from the mix comments for all the contest entries.

back off the compressor on the vox at the beginning, sounds a bit squashed. such a lively vocal and think you're much better off using volume automation to control the dynamics
