wish list

a good Direct In electric guitar distortion box.

Drums in which the heads can be evenly tuned by turning one lug on each drum.

A lot of ergonomic improvement could be realized with better use of tools that already exist. The combination of a keyboard and a mouse wheel can be fairly potent. There are 12 function keys; assign those to a group of twelve channels. Then use the combination of ctrl, shift, and alt along with the function key(s) for that channel to control parameters on that channel, along with the mouse wheel (or keyboard-mounted trackball) to change the value. My keyboard has shuttle controls built-in, some keyboards have a knob that is intended as a volume control but should be assignable to anything.

If anyone remembers the old days of word processing where everybody had the function key cheat sheet taped on their keyboards, you know what I mean. It was a steep learning curve, but it was possible to work much faster than in a mouse-driven point and click environment.

Of course software is changing away from the mixer model as it is. I'd much rather set a volume envelope for a track than set fader automation.

On the minus side, plug controls are completely non standardized and often not controllable with hotkeys. And while I love the UAD plugs emulation of vintage analog gear, I'm less enamored with the analog-style interface and the ridiculous amount of screen real estate they demand. UA should make optional skins that are less frilly, as should everybody else.

Completely agree, I've never liked virtual knobs. I can't ever get them to do what I want, hell they turn the completely opposite direction than I want sometimes.

I wish someone would put out a multi-input audio > midi box for e-drums. Just a simple converter box for use with programs like BFD, DFHS, Reason, etc. I know a couple of guys out there have already designed a box like this for DIY builders but there is'nt one commercially available. It seems like this would be a cheap little box to build, especially in mass quantities.

I hate the virtual knobs too. In Cubase SX you set the preference for how the knobs behave. I like pulling them up and down rather than trying to turn them.

I wish there was a machine that would set up all my recording stuff. This machine would take my sweet, sweet Taylor 110 out of it's case, tune it and get it ready. Then the machine would plug in all my stuff and all that. It would lay carpet on my concrete floor and make my room way bigger.

How about a multichannel, say 4 or 8 channel, outboard unit that runs the UAD plugs (or any plugs, for that matter) with the plug parameters controlled by computer via USB or FireWire cable?

In Cubase, you can now run hardware effect units (that are capable) as effect plugins just like software plugins. A multichannel unit would be nice to have.

Yeah, I was looking for one of these a while back and couldn't find anything. A $300 brain seems kinda overkill when all you want is MIDI out.

If you're going to go that far, how about a machine that would spit out hit songs all by itself while you sit back and drink a beer? And believe it or not, that day is coming.

Yep. I'd like something that works the other way, letting you use plugins as outboard effects.

We have outboard boxes that digitally model delays and reverb settings. Why not outboard that digitally models compressors, like what the UAD has?

Oh.....you meant a box that can run plugins. Cool idea.

A floating bridge that doesn't annoy the shit out of me.

More importantly, I need an A/B box to work the way I want it to: with one press of a footswitch, I can use either my amp's distortion or a clean sound through my effects processor.

A microchip that could be implanted in a drummer's head that would prevent him from rushing, dragging or playing too loud. :D

small speakers that sound so huge and crystal clear that you thought Axle rose himself was screaming and dancing just for you.

how about a device that you wear like glasses that follows the direction of your eyes so you could control your cursor without using a damn mouse.

Or a D-Compessor to attach to the radio to return some dynamics to music?

On a similar thought, I have always wanted TVs with built in compressors so that when the ferkin commercials start blasting out during the late night movie you don't have to hit the mute button. Just set the threshold and ratio to control the TV's max output at a comfortable level and never have to worry about offensive noise from ads ever again! :)
