My band and I are doing ruff recordings with a mic hung in the center of the garage, just for the purpose of remembering songs. The only problem is that the mics we have start to clip or fuzz out when cymbals are hit or I play my bass amp, come to think of it the guitar is a little fuzzy to. I want to find a mic that has a very broad frequency range so the recordings are clear and you can hear all the insturments reletivley clearly.

Any help would be appreciated

What kind of mic are you using? Maybee all the fuzz/dist is because you are recording to hot?

You could try recording the vocals seperately from the instuments.

Meaning .... after you lay down the instrumentals.

Just my 2 cents worth, but if all you're trying to do is record your songs for memory's sake, I've been pretty successful with taping our band's rehearsals on a cheap cassette recorder set in the middle of the practice space with the mike facing away from the drums. The quality is pretty harsh, (who am I kidding? Very harsh.), but you should be able hear what you need for future reference.
