Not sure if this is the best place to put this post, but I'm actually working on a website of all the different types of applications my services could be used for. As soon as I finish the current project I'm on, I'd like to add some game tracks to my site. Although writing the track is no problem for me, the problem is when it comes to potential clients and application. Is it necessary to do my productions in 5.1 because I dont have that accessiblity. I meen if it came down to it, could they in fact use me for the tracks and have it mixed again to 5.1 somewhere else or in there in home? Same goes for some of my orchestrations. But I do believe most game tracks are mixed in 5.1 right?

I'm assuming you're talking about video games, yes?

If it's going to a platform that supports 5.1 (Xbox360, PS3, etc.) and the game designers have allotted enough space for you to do a 5.1 mix, then yes you could do one.
And yes, you could do it in stereo now and later do a 5.1 mix if you wanted.

I personally wouldn't worry too much about 5.1 music-wise as far as games are concerned. I use a 5.1 system for gaming and have never really noticed any music coming from behind me so to speak. I'm pretty sure that the music is just in stereo, with the rear speakers being used obviously for the game sound effects. I might be wrong tho, I would have to check, but I'm pretty sure. Got me interested now. Good excuse to spend the evening gaming I guess :)

oh no, they use the rears for music too. Halo 2 is a good example. They may mix in quad so as to leave the center open for voice, but it's not uncommon to put some of the music in the back.

I love gaming in surround. I don't know how I ever survived in a game without it ;)

To be fair I often turn the music off on games, unless its really good, but I'm sure there are games with just music in stereo as well as in 5.1. Guess it just depends on whats required.

But yeah, gaming in surround and with EAX is awesome. I definitely couldn't imagine playing HL2 without it.
