Need some opinions on what you feel will give a more true mix when using powered monitors...

For info my new system is a Motu 828 / Logic Platinum / Event PS5 monitors.

To achieve truer frequency response from my monitors should I...

1) Crank the monitors up completely and use the output gain on the Motu to control the volume? (It would be at @ 1/3 for level I mix at)

OR

2) Turn the monitors up halfway or so and add more gain from the Motu? (It would be 2/3 here)

I did notice a shift in tone character with more accentuated lows with the monitors cranked and more accentuated mids with the 1/2 - 2/3 approach...

In live situations I've always found the "best sound" to come from a cranked amp. Does this hold true for monitors as well??

Thanks,

I think the consensus is that it’s best to cut the level at the monitors.

The monitor level adjustment is a line level attenuator in the preamp stage. You’re never really cranking the amp up unless the volume is loud.
