Flailing up a storm.
First off, I recently got an audix i5 (snare) and the beta 52 (kick)to go with 2 mxl 603s for my drum setup. I've barely tweaked location and done no EQ and i am already fully turgid. I am really excited to continue p[laying with this drum sound, since i finally feel like have somehting better than a bucket of suck to start with.

The other day i just barely got them all together and set up with the OHs set up recorderman style, and the beta 52 outside the reso head of the kick, just peeking inside, aimed toward the beater. It sounded pretty good but i had to really push the gain (on a channel of a soundcraft M4) on the beta52 to get a decent recorded signal (at -8 to -12 db). Gain was at something like +50db or so, nearly maxed on the pre channel. It didn't sound terrible, but i was surprised at how much gain it took to get that track.

that normal? Any suggestions on placement and such for this mic on kick and bass cab? Figure it will be fun to satisfy with reading some ideas until i can get out of work to try them out.

Thanks,
Daav

I usually have to dial down the gain when using a Beta52 (both inside and outside the kick drum).

On my Onyx board I'm usually at about 12 o'clock at the highest on the trim, so I can't really relate.

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll play around with it later and see if i am missing something in the setup or placement.

Phasing problems?

Likely actually, when i had it inside the kick, the OHs were picking it up and the kick sounded like bump-ump.
But after i moved it, the track was quiet solo'd too. Since it was a pretty quick run through, i will take some more time soon and switch out cables, etc.

I would also try another channel and make sure you don't have a pad on it.
