When using the gain knob in PROTOOS M box 2 how to determine the level of 0dbVU?

The mbox has built-in mic preamps, so the best thing to do is just tailor it for each instrument/microphone you're plugging into it - in other words, you'll generally want to set the gain as high as you can without clipping. Use the input device for a few seconds and set the gain before you start recording. The mbox also has a spot on the gain knob that's a detent-like marker - just look for the little white circle next to the gain knob.

No, I think he wants to know what the digital equivalent of 0dB in the analog world is.

General concensus here seems to say -18 dB, and that's assuming you're working in 24-bit. For 16-bit, it's more like -6dB.

i like to go in a zone say anywhere from 5/8 (a little more than half) to around 3/4 up the digital meter, this way, i give myself some room so i dont clip, but its not recording a block of ice.

listen for it, you can hear if you are too hot/not hot enough.. you think you won't know right? give it a shot, close your eyes and play with the gain knob, i bet you will come close!
