a mellow, spacey groovy thing.....
....i'm not saying that if you are slightly altered it wont work as well....
;)

really experimented with clean guitar tones on this one...
and a lot of walking finger bass....
the drums are completely synth, so this whole thing is a bit of a new twist for me.


currently this one works as an instrumental....
but i'd like to try a different approach with it.
i'm working out a lyric and melody for it right now.....
would love to hear any comments or suggestions....
 
First off, thanks for posting this as a wav file instead of a MP3. Second, I loved the bass work. I would have liked for the bass to be a little more prominent, but to be fair, I just finished listening to the Humble Pie album 'Smokin' which has a very big booming bass. I guess what I am saying is that I might be a little skewed in my view at the moment. Anyway, I really liked the composition.

i know EXACTLY what you mean about that bass sound/tone/mix, i dig it too.

i thought this bass track would have to be a little mellower in the mix, for everything else to work as well as it does.
it still sounds fat on my playback....

it's not a final mix, just a quick mix to get the idea out there, i'll focus on the bass more when i finish figuring out what to do with the song.

You are right of course, the same treatment that was used for 'Smokin' would not work for your song. I am looking forward to any updates you post for this song.
 
Wow - great playing and a really nice mix. Clean and spacious. Sounds fantastic to me. It's sort of like the Dead ditched Phil Lesh and hired Stanley Clarke!

Only thing I wasn't crazy about was the sound of the drums (snare & hat), but I get that the electronic drum is a style choice here.

that smoking bass sound, is really deep and mid heavy, very CLASSIC 'P-bass' and featured in the mix.
i guess it's the loudest thing in the mix, louder than the lead vox or guitars or bass!!

thanks man, i'm glad you liked it.
the drums, yes, you know, it's a big departure for me, if you listen to any of my other stuff,
it's all bigger rock drum sounds.
i really wanted this to be more synth-like,
a different feel, to work inbetween album cuts i'm planning.
 
I tried but our phone line has water damage at present and I didn't get very far before it timed out. Sorry - I'll return in a day or so.
 
Very cool sounds. Nice playing, imaginative song. I love the layered effects/guitar. I dig the bass too - at first I thought more bass in the mix was called for, then I listened again, and now I think you got pretty much right on. Nice bass playing too - really nice, in fact.

Pretty refined for a quick mix. . . sounds really good. BTW - isn't "Funkified" also the title of a Tower of Power song? Your Funkified is very different, but definitely funky.
 
Gonzo-X - I just listened to all your "The Time Is Magic" samples. Simply put, this incredibly good work. From the songs (at least the snippets I heard) to the guitar work to the vocals to the engineering - just awesome sounds.

hey, thanks for listening....
the bass is the tricky item, for sure.
as far as mixing, it's easy to want more of something,
but like you said, the more you listen, the more it makes sense sometimes.
i like power of tower, but do not know their material, i wouldn't doubt THEY would have a tune called that!
