Comments to read after you post your own:

-All these kids are in high school.

-I am in high school and I am only 16 (should I say "only"?).

-Bass drum sounds terrible to me, but he wouldn't let me change it.

-Mix was done in about 15 minutes

-Spent 1 hour micing and tuning up everything

-Bass and Guitar are both DId

-Sax done with a KSM 27 between the bell and the guys fingers, facing about 3/4th towards the hole.

-Drums were two MXL 603s random micing technique as overheads that just sounds good into a dmp3, a 57 on snare about 4-5 inches above the head faced dirrectly at the whole into a presonus tube pre, and a beta 52 on his untuned kick with no whole about 1 inch from the head faced most likely towards the floor time and up a bit also into a presonus tube pre.

-Keys done with his crappy keyboard into our DI boxes.

-I REALLY HATE THE SOUND OF THE BASS DRUM AND THINK IT RUINS THE MIX.

You are welcome to say w/e you want. If you ask I'll tell you exactly how I mixed it too but I'm too lazy right now.

that guitar solo starts out nice, then he trys to get to fancy and ruins it

Hes 17 give the kid a break!

Naw I agree with you. And so does he. There is a sax run at 3:22, This kid is 15 and he is pulling of runs like this, its incredable.

Wow, they've got a really mature sound to be so young. I have to agree that the guitar solo is a bit strange tho. He's using a lot of dissonant notes and not resolving them...just letting them hang so to speak. Sounded very improvised. Improvisation is something he'll naturally get better at tho. Also, the sax is going flat a little...especially at the beginning of the song. Tell him to watch his embouchure so that he doesn't loosen up to much during those little vibratos that he does. Otherwise, everything is great. Good job to everybody involved!

No one has really commented on the mix. I didn't play this song so I don't really care if the playing was good.

Pretty damn good mix. The kick is a bit boomy, so consider cutting the low ends. Try boosting around 300 Hz so it cuts through the mix more. The snare is pretty tight sounding, but I think it could use some brightness. Did you use compression on the snare track? If so, what were the settings? I think with different compression settings you can get more crack out of the snare and less of the attack sound. These guys play well; very impressive for high schoolers. The other instruments fit together in the mix well.

Really good work, keep it up!

yea the snare sounds like its got a bit too much attack and not enough body to it, and personally i think the sax is too high in the mix

Sounds good

Snare needs a little more "meat"
and the sax is a bit too up front.
bump the overheads up on the kit -- the tune and the style seems to lend itself to some nice swisshy cymbal sounds which you seem to have captured but would like to hear it up a bit. That being said there's alot going on with the cymbals during the git solo so you're going to have to ride the faders a bit.
not crazy about the bass guitar sound and I agree about the bass drum sound.

All that being said. considering the amount of time spent setting up and mixing AND especially the amount of time you've spent on this earth ;),
good job.

The band is very hot sounding for some young dudes.
kudos!

WUPS,

forgot about this thread for a while, well lest see, the snare from what I remember wasn't that compressed. maybe about 1/4 to 2/3 attack, Mostly the compressor is being used for the gaining because I had to track very softly because of how hard he hits that snare in some other songs. I've gotta agree with all of you on the bass drum. First off its a pretty bad sounding kick with no hole. Secondly he made me EQ it in the worst way possible because he thought it sounded "cool". This is the last time I let a client say anything should be a certain way because it sounds cool. Make your music sound "cool" not your quality. Anyway, what about the bass sound, I personally think it feels a bit dry, but what do you all think? Maybe I'll add a bit of chorus (just a tad) to give it kind of a less dead sound...? Sax is a bit out front agreed. I was going to add a bit more verb to it as well, maybe that will bring it back a bit, but taking it down will help too. Sax is also a bit flat at times if no one noticed. Thanks for your comments. Anymore?

Ben

More ride, less sax, plus tell that sax to either intonate better on the lower notes or tune up, because something's off there....I wish I had cats like this to jam with when I was in HS....
