Fun project. (NL5 on the drums).

Hey guys,

NL5 offered some drum tracks a while ago. I've been just playing the drums and playing along with my guitar having fun.

While watching an old movie recently I heard a song that I thought would be fun to do. So I hacked this up. I won't say the name of the tune and hope that I played it good enough for you all to recognize what it is. Let me know what you guys think it is.

I tend to be less talented for the most part and I would really appreicate any input on the way this was done and on the backing guitars and on all the bits and pieces.

NL5, thanks very much. :) Also, I cut the second half of the drums. I figured this is just for fun and I don't need to draw it out and make it less fun. :) I also sped them up a little. :)

Comments on the bass would be nice (other than the fact that it desperately needs to be compressed), since it's just my guitar EQ'd like crazy and passed thru a Resonance filter in ACID Pro 4.

Rami - don't worry I am still working on the drum track you put up. I'm actually still trying to figure out the layout of the tracks and put an original song to it. :)

Wow! - pretty cool - and I recognize the song. ;)

But, I can't take credit for the drums - my drumming is pretty sad. :(
 
Are you kidding me? I love the drums. It's just an amazing feeling playing with real drums. I have been playing with drum machines for a 2-3 years now and those just don't compare. This is another experience. The feel of the real drums just inspires me to do a lot more with the guitar. :)

Aaaah! I thought you did those. To quote a friend of mine: tee-hee! I'm glad you shared the drum track and I'm glad you like the monster of an incomplete end result. :)
 
I know I've heard the tune before, but can't name it. Drums and bass sound good, but the guitar sounds kind of shrill. Almost midi like. It's not horrible, just that the rest of the music sounds more natural. All in all, not a bad tune. I'd like to hear it with a more natural sounding guitar tone.

All guitars? Or just the rhythms? Or the lead also?

I know the rhythms sounded pretty shrill to me also and I thought, I'd just EQ them up a little past 400H and before 800H. Didn't work. :)

Is that song"Evreytime you go away"or something like that?...like the sound of the rthym guitars and bass alot on this...nice and clean and crisp...for the lead tone seems a bit "crispy" and thin...but I think it works for this song...

Well now that you posted in public, I'll say that the tune is indeed "Everytime you go away". I heard it in the ending of Planes, Trains, And Automobiles and this was a version done by some band called "Blue Room" or something????

When I listen to it over and over, I feel there's no way a guitar can do justice to the tune properly. Especially when this girl singing it was singing it in bits and pieces, leaving a lot of tune connecting to humming and to reverb. Also the rhythm sections on the guitars and keyboards drive the overall impression. Of course, I can't play good guitar either, yet, so that's doesn't help. But I tried and it was a lot of fun. :)

I remember Hall and Oates sung it more. And Paul Young also did a good cover. Anyhoo, as we say in TX, thar she is!

Stuff like this bugs me, it just sounds so familiar but I can't remember why. Then I see you gave it away in your last post :D Mwhahaha, slippery as a snake I am.

Anyway, cool track. The bass fills up my room here. It's laid back, makes me want to relax some instead of go and play a nasty solo I'm going to try in a few. Anyway, I like the little fuzz on the lead guitar you have here. Sounds good for the song. I think you could thicken up the tone a bit still. You could do that by adding midrange, doubletracking it, adding reverb, or actually recording another take over the top of it and pan them slightly differently. Still sounds cool though. Cool tune!
 
Wow - Hall and Oates - that brings back some memories (Sarah Smile).

Cool - I kinda like your tone on the leads. It got that edge of feedback sound - great for amp only.

Yeah I scrolled down and saw the name of it - wonder if I would have guessed it had I not? We'll never know.

Awesome solo at the end....

Hehe, if you listen carefully at the end, the solo is really messed up. None of the notes are properly spaced. More are picked than pulled off. Anyhoo, I'm glad it sounds ok enough.

Now, variaxman, he can solo. :)

Aww man...did I blow something here :o ?Sorry about posting the title...I'm bad like that...Its like I have game show Tereits(sp?) syndrome...I just have to blurt out answers...drives my wife crazy if were watching Jeopardy on TV! :rolleyes:
 
Not bad. Well played. Drums sound nice. The guitars all sound kind of tiny and direct. There is some nasty buzz, moreso on the left.

No offence dude, but the guitar sounds are absolutely awful. Not that they haven't tracked, I mean, they just don't sound natural. If you really must DI your guitar parts (I do too) try getting a POD or something of the sorts to give your tones the realism that they deserve.

EDIT: Also, no amount of EQ or compression will fix the recorded tone of the guitars. Playing is good though...

Oh no offense taken at all. I mean even I think the guitar sounds a little out there.

I realize that DI'ing the dist. guitar is just not gonna have a good enough result. But the clean guitar should be workable. How to record and fix it, I'm not sure. I was thinking about getting a POD for a while but thought better of it and decided, I'd rather get more gear I can use if I get together with others to play. :)


scrubs - the buzz might be a mixture of the dist. guitar and the bass that was recorded using a clean sound and then EQ'd like crazy to sound like bass (It was recorded on my Fender Squire). :)

variaxman - No you didn't ruin anything. Someone had to eventually give out the answer. Besides, it may not have been recognizable enough for people to comment. Now I'm getting some comments, because people know what it's supposed to be and what it really is sounding like. :)
 
The clean sound

The clean sound is cool, no prob DI-ing (normally). Also got this good tip for micing up amp... Might hekp with getting down some sweet tones.

Place mic in front of amp (arbitrarily to begin with will do).
Monitor with headphones.
Turn amp right up so that you can hear amp hiss through phones (be careful!, I take no reponsibility for blown amp speakers etc....)
1. Tune EQ on amp controls until hiss sounds tonefully sweet.
2. Move mic until tone is even sweeter
3. Goto 1 until satisfied.
4. Restore amp to recording volume, tone should be a lot sweeter than to begin with).

NB. Just to clarify, I mean EQ controls and speakers on/in guitar amp, not sudio amp/speakers.

I think that's one of the biggest issues. I can't mic the amp. Two reasons: 1) At my apartment there isn't a time during the day when it will be quiet enought to mic. And second the neighbors will probably be b*tch*ng up a storm at the noise. 2) I don't have a decent mic.

Else I would have definitely tried to mic. I have some simulators for the clean sounds to give them the dist sound. I've been thinking about renting some practice space along with some other people. As in forming a band, finally. Been thinking for a couple of years, tho!
 
How about...

You mentioned a bit back that you'd rather save money to get kit that you could use in a band environment. How about a Line 6 Flextone. This amp is essentially an amplified POD. It also has a recording out on it which cuts the speaker when used. I.e. you can benefit from the POD features for home recording and as an amp for live work...

Although, it might not be your cup of tea since its digital and may not sound `valvey' enough for your tastes.

It is a pain in the arse though when we home recording enthusiasts have to keep the neighbours sweet.
