hi!

i'm 17 years old and getting into recording stuff. my brother had most of our recording equipment (read: delta 44 and YSM-1 monitors) at his workplace, and one day i was bored, so i tried a recording using whatever really limited equipment is left here and came up with this:

--- SONG NAME = "BOMB" ---
http://www.mp3.com/braddanyluk/
--- SONG NAME = "BOMB" ---

i'm curious as to how this turns out on other people's monitor speakers.

equipment used:

- 2 SM58's
- 1 Rode NT1
- 1 Yorkville passive DI
- 1 Mackie 1604 VLZ
- Sound Blaster Live! Value (broken ... only left side of line-in works, so i could only record one track at once... had to do a guestimate submix in the mackie)
- Really crappy small carpeted room
- Cambridge PCWorks 1.5" computer speakers for mixing (heh)
- My ears.

i wrote the song, played all instruments, sang, etc etc etc. i was not very careful with anything, just sort of threw up some mics, quickly guessed at EQ without checking anything really, and mixed within an hour.

anyway, let me know how this sounds.

thanks!

I really like your style, man... very, VERY Sonic Youth-influenced.

I LOVE that drop out... when the rhythms disappear. Kick ass rock song, so far...

There seem to be some recording issues... and it will be listened to on actual monitors tomorrow...

Listen to the build up... 1:21... very creative... GREAT CHANGES! Hey, I'll add my "5" too.

Hey, man. Welcome to the board in a big way! Stay here! We wanna help you improve your stuff (and get all the cool, free mp3's we can, too :D)

Thanks for sharing...

Great song my friend. The drums (the snare in particular) sounds good. But when the band is playing hard, I can hear some distortion hash going on. I can't tell if it's the kick that's ditorted or if the over all level (driven by the kick) is clipping the entire main mix buss. The song itself and performance is very good but do I hear Autotune on that vocal?:D

Great song dude!

I really liked the sound of the vocal harmonies in the slower section of the song. The whole song sounded very nice in my monitors. The distortion on the drums was ok to me (personal preference i guess).

For a recording in a creative Live! this is really amazing!

cheers!

thanks for the comments guys!

the distortion/compression thing going on with the drums is actually the NT1 (used as overhead) crapping out on me... i had the preamp turned all the way down on the mackie and the signal was still too hot... mic wasn't too close either, there was just nothing i could do about that. in the end i decided the sound was not all that unpleasant, in fact it added a bit of an edge, so i just went with it.

THE BOMB BABY! Loved this song...........liked the rawness......could hear autotune...is there any way to make the autotune less noticable?Well crafted.....great dynamics.......loved smooth harmony part.......let us hear some mo.....it's all gravy on a cheese biscuit!!!!!!!

yeah, it's called learning how to sing.
or, at the very least, not just sticking with my very first vocal take and thinking "i've got autotune and i'm feeling super lazy"

Freakin' good stuff man. Love it. I love the sound as is, though I could really do without the tuning of the vocals. Once I hear that autotune sound, it kind of ruins it for me in a way. I'd *much* rather hear someone singing a little out of tune, especially on this kind of song, rather than hear the imprint of that evil beast (sorry, I have this problem with autotune - I'm working on my tolerance).

Great job with this one.

Chris

Nice work. Puts a lot of things I've heard (and done) to shame. Definitely demo quality. Didn't need that weird telephone vocal eq for a half second there at the the end, but everything else was just as it should be. I must be getting used to it, because I didn't hear the autotune, and I hate it too...

Let's hear some more!

As a sidenote, I'm going through your list of songs on your mp3.com site and downloading them, and laughing my ass off. I love these two gems:

(description of a song called "PICTURE THIS")Sometimes I enjoy using a lot of mysterious symbolism, because it accomplishes even less than saying something straight out.

(description of a song titled "I CAN'T ROCK")
See title above.

AUTOTUNE RULES
That's my motto. No complaints on the autotune whatsoever. Use it, live it, be it.

"BOMB" = Liked it. I can see why Participant especially enjoyed this. Kinda' reminds me of his style. You should have more lyrics about shaving your balls (inside joke) , but otherwise, this is really good, and it sounds decent on my new monitors, but that doesn't really mean much, because some of my stuff is even sounding decent on these monitors...so you never know.

Bomb - I love the harmonies in the breakdown and the build up. Good song all round.
Wasted Ninja - Kinda reminds me of Radiohead/coldplay. In a chilled out good kinda way.
Emo Kids - I'm digging the synth drums and hip hop bass. nice one.

You've got quite a distinctive voice and sound. I like it. Definatly some of the best stuff I've heard done on a soundblaster. What am I saying - it's better than what I've done on my 8 input interface through monitors!
Nice one Bradley.

Very old school (I was raised on college radio rock, and this is it :) ). I obviously like it :p

That's not to say it's perfect, but the mixing is good (where's the bass guitar?) and the slow acoustic part works very well, and I was surprised by the speed-up to get back into the verse tempo. I liked that alot, it's not easy to do and most people are scared to try stuff like that (living colour's "Mind Your Own Business" from STAIN is an example of this 'done right').

Nice work.

i hate that this sounds better then what i am doing...i'm gonna blame it on the equipment...!!
and hey - does autotune come in DX plugin form? haha
