Frustrated

I have been using some backing tracks of Shadow tunes and laying down the lead guitar/melody on the remaining tracks. I am using a fostex MR-8. (BT on track 1 and lead guitar on 2,3,4. ) I use a POD XT live for effects. I go direct to MR-8. When I load the tracks to my computer I have been trying to find a good audio mixing program to put effects on the lead on the individual tracks. I have tried N-track, Audacity, and a few others but nothing seems to help working with the lead tracks. Perhaps it is the learning curve to use these programs that adds to the frustration. I need help from folks more experienced than I to know if I am even heading in the right direction on how I am approaching this. Any help would be appreciated.

I personally like Reaper... it looks like you are using cheap/free software. But every program has a learning curve.

And Reaper comes with quite a few plugins already... maybe you'll find something you like. I would probably just focus on compression, reverb, maybe delay. Keep the effects low, simple. But that's just me and I don't know what kind of music Shadow is.

When you say you use the POD XT for effects... do you mean more than just overdrive? You might get better results (or at least more flexible results) if you record the tracks with just a guitar tone you like and then use plugins to add effects. That's how I like to do it, especially when recording direct.

Does Reaper have a demo I can try a few days? The Shadows were an instrumental band in the 50s and 60s. Pull them up on u-tube and check them out. I just enjoy doing their instrumentals. I have my POD xt Live set for clean settings very close to the Shadows sound.
