I am totally ignorant and I want to transfer the recordings of my father which have been recorded on his tape recorder to my pc. Which is the best method please? Any simple and not costly equipment required for the purpose.

Ant decent soundcard will suffice. The better the soundcard, the better the final product. What you'll definately need is recording software. There's a product called n-Track that's pretty cheap that'll allow you to do what you want.

I've used shreware software called "gold wave" and a standard sound blaster type card to transfer tapes to get the job done.

n-track is probably a lot more than you'll need...

there is also a program called "Acoustica" i remember...just basic sound recorders.

Just get an RCA-1/8" cord from radio shack, run your tape player to the soundcard line in, and hit record. then you can trim it up and it's done. I wouldn't mess with any "noise reduction" etc.

Better the equipment better the quality, maybe - but if it's old stuff recorded on cheaper equipment onto 1/4" tape etc. etc. - then there isn't that much quality to worry about, standard old SB16 should be fine.

Always was for me.

For an adapter, you should use a dual RCA to 1/8" mini cable stereo adapter. Plug it into the "line out" or "tape out" of your tape deck and into the "line in" of your computer (NOT "mic in"). You should use a component-type tape deck rather than a "boom box." Definitely no "noise reduction."

Here's some reading material for you on the subject

from ordinery tape to pc

I am thankful to all the gentlemen who have advised me on the problem.
I am away from my native country and shall report to the forum after I apply what has been advised. The article by Alan Zisman was further helpful in any of the doubts that were still with me.
Thanks again.
