It Worked!!!`

Okay, here it is. The Y cable with 2 male rca's and an 1/8 inch jack worked. It's recording the tape from the stereo system. Thanks guys for all of the help!!!. :)

transfer trouble

I'm also trying to move some cassette recordings to my computer so that I can post on a website. I followed the advice given here about the Y cable and was successful in that respect, but the transferred sound is terribly distorted. I've played around with the settings and nothing seems to work. Unfortunately, from what I've read on this site, it could be my sound card. I own a Sony Vaio laptop computer. It doesn't have a "line-in", only a "mic-in" as an input device. I downloaded the trial version of Cool Edit and received the same results in terms of quality of sound. I've also read that I need to use a preamp in order to make direct digital recordings to my computer. Can someone advise me as to what I should be using i.e., new sound card, preamp or both so that I can transfer from my stereo equipment to my computer?

Thanks

Thank you AlChuck

Whew! It's working. For the record, here's what I did to get it to work: Start--Programs--Accessories--Entertainment--Volume Control--Options--Properties--Recording--[select Line In]

Thanks for your help!

Same problem here

I was planning on recording from my Tascam 424 to my computer. I hooked the line outs on my Tascam to the mic in (I have no line in) on my soundcard. I selected the recording controls, "line", but I'm getting nothing out of my computer speakers. What may I be doing wrong? Thanks.

But if you have no line in, enabling it won't work. You have to enable the Mic in. You might be able to get this to work, but start with the levels way low to start to avoid an unpleasant audio surprise. If your soundcard has no Line In, it's likely a very cheap and poor-quality card, so don't expect miracles here.
