howdy, ehrr, i think i've posted on here before, but nevermind.

I'm trying to get a half-decent way fo recording my songs and burning them onto CD, for the least amount of money possible.

I just started univeristy, so funds really are on the negative side at the moment.
I'm just wondering if it's possible to use a new laptop i'll be getting from Saint Nick in december to record stuff on, then connect it to a CD writer to get my own posh CD.

Bearing in mind, i have no knowledge of soundcards, memory, ram, inputs and the rest of it. Nothing, i know nothing.

I want to know if it's possible to stick a drum machine, guitar, bass, mic or whatever into some hole on the back of my laptop; record a few tracks one by one, mix them together then burn onto CD. If it is possible, can someone please tell me how to do it?

Please tell me it's possible. If it's not i'll cry.

You will need a soundcard if u intend to use a laptop. There aren't so many cheap ones for laptops as desktops but perhaps if u have a firewire connection from the laptop you could get something like the M-Audio Audiophile Firewire. Otherwise a USB soundcard would be suitable but being a slower connection it could have trouble recording exactly in time (latency).

A better bet is to have a desktop and u can get something like an Emu 0404 for a reasonable price.

The higer the spec of the computer the better but perhaps go to a music productio specialist for advice and for a system that suits music production and not say video games.

To sequence teh tracks a low cost but good sequencer is Tracktion, try a search on Google.
