Hey y'all,

Here's a brand new, full-fledged recording of an older tune. I'd love to get opinions on the mix, as I think it's the best recording and mix I've done to date.

Thanks!

Vocals sound real nice. I'd like more drums - particularly kick and snare. The overheads are fine. I think you can just bring up the close mics if you got em. Handclaps sound good.

Nice easy piece. Sounds fine to me. Reminds me of Sugarloaf for some reason.

Greg: Thanks. I was wondering if the snare was a tad bit too soft. I thought the kick was up enough, but I'll check it out on a few more systems and re-examine.

Manslick: Thanks for the listen. Never heard of Sugarloaf, so I'll have to check that out.

Anyone else have anything to add before I revise?

Thanks

Overall it sounded OK. Nice singing voice. I like handclaps.

I thought the instruments, in general, sounded a little muffled. The vocal and cymbals were the only things that seemed to have a high end.

Bass is a bit muddy to me. But I could imagine other people would like it that way.

Little pop at :13. Might just be a vocal artifact. I'm hearing a lot of others.

I'm with Greg on the drums. There's some room for them to come up without losing the easy groove of the tune. I think you did a great job of bringing everything together--the drums sound like they're in the "room" with the other instruments, but they sound like they're really far back in a big room.

Triple M: Thanks for the listen (and compliment). I agree about the darker, muffled sound. I'm going to try some EQ to work on that. I can't hear the pop you're talking about. Maybe it has to do with the conversion to mp3?

Whitestrat: That's several comments about the drums being low (including a few from the band themselves), so they'll definitely come up. Thanks!

Ok, here's my second attempt. I brought up the drums a good bit, tried to EQ a bit of air and highs overall, and made a few other slight adjustments. Better?

Thanks

I started to listen to the 1st mix but discovered the 2nd.
From the brief 1st to 2nd the diff is quite sigificant - the drums sound in place not in another place. They're subtle so don't take over.
A lovely lament to the lost latitude of callowness.
Very restrained but also just right. The key/guitar figure works well.
Terrific job on mix 2.

The 2nd mix sounds really great. You can hear every instrument clearly but they still blend!

My only gripe is that the hand claps almost sound like clipping. Other than that, it sounds great!

Rayc: Thanks for the listen! Yeah I think the drums sit much better now as well.

SloppyJo: I was wondering about the claps. They're a bit lower in this mix than the last one, and maybe now they're a little too low to clearly hear what they are? I don't know. Maybe I'll bring them up a tad and see what happens. Thanks!
