THIS POST IS NOT DIRECTED TO ANYONE JUST WANT TO GET SOME VIEWS AND OPINIONS FROM THE GROUP OF PRODUCERS IN HERE

The topic is free sounds. I have been approached by a gang of cats who are proclaiming to want to step their game up or develop a better sound but only want free sounds to do it. my question is "Is this even possible, practical or realistic? Isnt the first investment to invest in yourself. I have had cats want basically my whole sound library, which I have payed for, for free. Not talking about just my drum kits but my other sounds as well. Or they try to offer me some pirated software they downloaded like this is an even trade. Oh dont get me wrong I have and still get free stuff from time to time but for what i want i dont rely on the willy wonka hunt. I also got cats who i do throw sounds at and they throw stuff at me as well cuz there are serious and not trying to throw trash plus they fam and I know i can rely on them and vice versa. When ever I have searched free stuff i would find like 5 good to about 50 bad. I found i was spending more time searching and less time making music. I know there are some people out there who can take a trash sounding instrument and tweak it to perfection. hats off to them cats. I guess at some point this hobby for some takes on a head of its own. Where do the hobby line end? for me if its just a hobby then yea i dont mind spending hours looking through trash for the willy wonka ticket. But from what I have seen most of the cats who are on the level I aim for have put in time and work and money. Or i could just be up to early in the morning what you guys think? I mean do you take these guys serious? Or do you feel people take you serious when you only want free stuff? LIKE I SAID THIS IS NOT TO OFFEND CUZ LORD KNOWS I GOT LOVE FOR EVERYBODY IN HERE. I AM JUST CURIOUS AS TO WHAT YOU ALL THINK.

Well you know we talked about this one before, but that's the thing....some people are only in it as a hobby (at first). There comes a time when you have to feel shit out in the beginning. It's easy to write something off as a hobby if you're not very good at it. Once that changes though then you wanna expose it and try to come up off it.

I ain't hatin' on anybody who uses free shit, traded shit, or bought shit. I trade sounds on the regular, it's how I step my arsenal up. It's how I have about 2 gigs worth of drumkits and still growing. It's how I find new sounds that I can use to my advantage. BUT with that said, I also trade off a lot of stuff that I've paid for, searched for, and tweaked myself. It's a trade off. But when people hit me up constantly for free shit, I usually pass on it. I'll give you the same resources I got it from, but handing it over is usually a totally different story for most people. Sometimes folks don't respect what you do until they have to do it for themselves.

You're right though, when you see it as more of a hobby, that's when it's time to invest. Be that time, labor, money, sacrifices, whatever you gotta do sometimes.

And to answer your original question about is it practical, possible, or realistic, yes. It can be done for free...it's just a matter of who's doing the hustling (as far as paying for shit goes). If I'm trading free shit for free shit, there was no effort on my part to get that free shit other than the sites I had to go to or whatever. If I paid money for it, I'm going to want an investment to make my money back for my purchases. Damn near everything I've paid for soundwise, I've made my money back and then some...I'm just selective of who I'll sell it to. Can't have everybody using your duplicate arsenal.

hmmm..never did free sounds..dont use software to make tracks..i might need to see whats out there for a friend of mines..

good topic tho..

i've come across tons of sounds good sounds on the net and i wasn't even looking for em. if they dude can find free software then they can find their own sounds i would think.

as far as I go im just getting into this production shit so for me I dont want to spend to much on it while im just learning...... so my thing is to come up with the best stuff possible with the free sounds I have and can get....... then once I get nice ill invest in things like a sound module..... maybe turntable and records (if i start sampling)....... but for now im only looking for free stuff...... plus im a college student so free is my favorite price right now..... I think you can come up with so hot stuff using free sounds........ but to get to that next level yea u gotta pay.... at least from what i've heard

Like i said i didnt want to seem like i was attacking nobody. I just wanted cats to get a feel for this topic and get the overall consensus of the people and how cats feel

speaking of free sounds anybody wanna share where i can get some from?

I have mixed feelings on "free sounds", ofcourse you have to pay for quality material. But years ago when I first got into production and realized my workstations drums weren't cutting it all I decided to get online and look for drum samples. I have bought in the past few years atleast 15 or so drum sample CD's... Most of which sound like sh*t off of some crappy casio keyboard, OR they were sampled straight out of Hip-Hop Songs with backing instruments. I wasted a couple hundred of dollars atleast. I couldnt even resell them on Ebay because I wouldnt wish them on my worst enemy (well maybe I would). So I definetly understand trading, and even wanting free samples. I still look for free stuff, because I dont have to pay for it to hear it and decide if it's usable and the best thing is I can tweak them if they're usable and they won't sound as much like the original.

that is a dam good point. most station drums are trash. These days most cats offer demoe of the sounds before you cop them so i guess in a since free and pay have that in common

Most factory drums are either straight trash or you have to tweak them wayyy too much for them to even be passable on a track (IMO). I've can listen to some bullshit drums and hear what I can do to them to turn them from trash to treasure. Not something I like to do frequently, but sometimes I do it so they stand out and don't sound like the typical 808 or 909 all the time. I did a google search for free drumkits and found quite a bit of sounds to look through....took me weeks to go through and hear it all.

I've bought some in the past that weren't worth the money, some were very good though....USE THOSE SAMPLES BEFORE YOU BUY!!!
