Holy shit, I've been on the net all day, that's a first for me. Before I sign off for the eve and forget to mention it I have to recommend Audacity.
Audacity is a free wave editor that supports VSTs, which is bomb. I've only seen this feature on high end editors like Sound Forge. It only supports 16-bit resolution so it may not be the greatest for mastering (although it does a good job with the right plugins), but is excellent for sample manipulation/mutilation and other types of editing. It also has unlimited undo/redo, which is very useful for ABing and trying out weird FX.
Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.
