Four Track. Analogue to Apple Garage

Hi ...
I am very keen to get my Tascam 42 masters into Garage - for each Tascam track I want one Garage track. I want to be able to mix my Tascam stuff in an Apple Garage band environment. Can anyone help me. I know I need an interface of some sort to separate and keep separate the four tracks - if this is indeed even possible. I've been told a Presonus Firebox would do the trick and then later I'm told it won't...
Help!!!

Gotta dump each track separately dude. Have one track playing and mute the others while you bounce down.
 
initially hesitated to respond because I too thought the 42 was a two track machine. anyway assuming you got 4 tracks you want to transfer to the computer... dumping one track at a time is actually not a good thing to do for two reasons. Firstly, your computer can record stereo (two tracks) from it's not normal sound card so panning say tracks 1 left and track 2 right then recording that would save you some time.

BUT, you can't do this either as your deck won't play at precisely the same speed everytime so when you record say tracks 1 and 2 on your computer, start over and record 3 and 4. When you line up those tracks on your computer they won't be in perfect sync and it would be a real pain in the ass to get them to line up with out a synchroniser.

You need a soundcard that can record 4 simultaneous inputs.
 
Sorry I meant Tascam 424 not 42!

So is there no interface that will allow me via a firewire to send four tracks to four seperate tracks in Garage?

The Edirol FA66 should do that. There is a drawback that it has two XLR/TRS inputs on the front for channels 1&2 and two phono inputs on the back for 3&4 so you'll have to dick about with cable types and levels to get them to match.

There don't seem to be any interfaces which have 4 inputs all the same that I can find. An 8-way interface would do the job, but the cost is likely to be significant.
 
While it is an 8 input interface, the TASCAM US-1641 is a great bargain right now, look it up on the musician's friend website, I would be giving it serious consideration if I were looking for an interface at this time.
