Trailing Behind Again
... in a pawn shop. I took down the serial number and the model and ran a check on the Fender site for it. Turns out it was produced somewhere between '82 and '88. It's a lefty and retailed for $265. The pawn shop had it on sale for $399.

Should I go back and tell the guy that I found it on the site and what it's really worth and see if he will make me a better deal? It's in pretty damn good condition, with minimal scratches, and it plays really nice. If I could get him to part with it for less than $265, I think it would be worth it.

Anyone have any experience with pawn shop guitars?

Does anyone know if Fender baseline model guitars appreciate in value that much?

Being a pawnshop it would depend on what they gave for it. If they gave the owner 350 for it, then I doubt they'll drop the price much, if any. On the other hand, rationally speaking of course, if they bought it from the owner for like 100 bucks and are just trying to make a profit because they think it may be worth 399, you may be able to haggle. I'd see if Fender still makes that model, if they do, go in and quote him the price of a brand new guitar of the same model and see how that goes.

I thought of that too. I was looking for it on the Fender site, but I ran out of time and didn't see it.

I hope they are still in production, because if not, it's going to make it more valuable!

What is the model and what not?
Here is what the Fender site has:

STANDARD - SERIES

Acoustic guitars, imported from Asia. Distributed in the US by MIDCO

F210LH 1982-1988 $265 Spruce top, Mahogany back and sides

I am starting to think they don't make them anymore. It may be hard to convince him to part with it cheaply.

That could very well be. I'm reminded of a Fender Jazz Bass, Long Scale, teal green, that I saw in a pawn shop back in the early 90s. They had a $70.00 price tag on it, so needless to say I was beside myself. I went in a day or so later to pick it up and the guy had just replaced the tag. He had changed the price from 70 to 400. According to him, a few minutes before I walked in, a guy that worked at one of the local shops came in and saw it, and told him what he could get out of it. I was 14 or 15 at the time and I could have cried lol still pisses me off to this day.

Back on topic, I'd say that if it's in great shape, it'd be worth every penny he is asking, but I'm a fender nut, so of course I'll say that.

I've never owned a left-handed Fender either. I've always done the Jimi Hendrix thing with strat copies, so it would be a real treat. It's got really good tone for an entry level guitar too. I will have to go back there and see what he will take for it.
Since it's a lefty, I don't think I have to worry about someone coming in and sniping it out from under me any time soon. (Of course since I said that... )

lol yeah, you just jinxed yourself. Good luck though, let us know how it goes!

I'll try to get on here tomorrow. I am going to go there after work today and see what he says.

It also makes a diff how long the shop has had it. The longer it's been sitting there, the more apt they are to deal. My ROT for pawn shop shopping is to offer half what they have an item tagged for and see what happens.

Thanks! I'll give that a shot. I think half is about what it's really worth anyway, according to all I've been able to find.

This is just my opinion, but Fender acoustics are (and always have been) pretty crappy.

If you want to find a great sounding, nice playing Asian-made acoustic for cheap, look into an old Takamine or Yamaha for the best values.

Unlike their electric guitars, the Fender name means absolutely NOTHING on acoustic guitars, because they've never been known to make a good one.

True all of that. My brother has one that is all mahogany with a 6 on a side headstock. Total piece of dookie. I have a cheap yamaha that I have dragged around for years that is louder with much better tone. Playability is similar - medeocre.

Buck, do you know your image in your sig is messed up?

I recently picked up a fender 12 string electric acoustic and I'm rather pleased. It's a fine sounding guitar imo

I've never been a fan of Fender acoustics either. I think that for the money, there are better entry-level guitars around. Now finding a lefty may be another story, but Yamaha, Washburn, Ibanez, and Alvarez all make pretty good entry-level acoustics.

The left handed thing is the key. I did manage to find a place that is advertising a lefty Ibanez, so I will look into that. If it sounds better and plays better than the Fender, I know what I am going to do...

Sure! I have a couple options left to check out here. San Diego is full of music stores and pawn shops. But it couldn't hurt.

No kidding. Fender definatley figured out how to make electrics, but their acoustics don't live up to the legacy. Fender acoustics really aren't the great, some sound pretty bad come to think of it!
