I saw a fostex model 80 with the mixer in a closet at my school and asked my teacher about it and he said the school is trying to get rid of it. He said he ( well the school) would take $50 for it. Is it any good? I have no knowledge about reel to reels and I'm not even sure it works but it looks like its in pretty good condition.

Grab it!!!!

No question about it, even if they need some work I would grab that in a heartbeat.

I say "yes" if you are in the market for a 1/4" 8-track.

Parts for Fostex decks are harder to come by, but they sound great especially considering the format, and its the only 1/4" 8-track you'll find that does 15ips. That means, of course that you'll go through tape faster than if you used a Tascam 388, but that is really a whole different animal. $100 is a really good price if everything works. Test it out. Take a goo look at the heads. THAT'S the kicker...if the heads are worn I'm not sure if $100 is a good deal, but if the heads are good then $100 for a fully functioning Model 80 is a GREAT deal. Look at the heads with a flashlight. Use your fingernail to feel for wear grooves.

My understanding is it also comes with a board. What kind of board? Are we talking a 5x1 shure mic mixer, or something like a Fostex 450? (Which is the model used in hte owner's manual...)

Make sure it all works of course, but it's a killer deal. If the heads do have some heavy wear (wonder what / how often it was used at your school...) you might still be able to get them reconditioned for another $200 or so (including the erase head) from JRF.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the heads then...if it comes with a 450, $100 is a crazy steal. If you are into parting stuff out you will at least be able to get a return on the investment of the heads turn out to be toast, and even at that the 450 is a fine project mixer. You can do a lot with that mixer and a Model 80 for sure.

Neat find.

Keep us posted.

So now I'm not even sure if I will be able to buy it, since someone else was already interested in it before me... However my teacher let me take it home and try it out. He said he's going to talk to the guy and hopefully be able to sell it to me instead.

Anyways, I connected it up to my interface (M-audio Profire 2626) and recorded the first tape i loaded up. I think its the high school band from my school in the 80s? Aside from a few level adjustments, this is basically raw and straight from the tape.

HAHAHA!!! :)

That sounds GREAT!

I LOVE IT! :p

How many tracks did they track to?

How do the heads look?

I'm tellin' ya, the Fostex 1/4" 8-track decks really are nice sounding. Pretty neat!
