Fostex MR-8 mkII 8-Track Digital Recorder mixer hookup?

My friend just got a Fostex MR-8 mkII 8-Track Digital Recorder. He wants a few more additional XLR and 1/4" inputs, and was wondering if you can connect a mixer to it. Mixer out > MR-8 in > MR-8 usb to computer...would that work? He's pretty new to recording and I'm not really familiar with digital 8 tracks.

I've never hooked my Fostex up to my computer through the USB, so I'm not sure about that, but I would think that if he got a mixer with XLR or 1/4" outputs he could probably do that.

But don't quote me on it, I've never tried it.
 
Does the Mr-8 have 1/4" inputs, but not for line/guitar? I'm pretty sure the mixer he's getting has 1/4" outputs, so hopefully he'll be able to hook it up.
