Hello, I just bought a Fostex Model 80 1/4" 8 track reel to reel. Everything seems good except that when I turn it on (with no tape in it), track's 2 and 3 seem to have some noise or something on them. The LED's are showing are showing about a -7dB input. Is this something that will just be fixed by degaussing the head or will I have to do further repairs? Thanks.

Does this noise appear on the outputs? Any chance you could post a sample of it here or something?

Degaussing won't help this. How long have you left the unit powered up? It could be some capacitors that need time to stabilize before they shut up. Turn it on and leave it on overnight and check it in the morning. It certainly won't hurt. If it's still noisy, have it checked from the power supply to final outputs by a good tech.

Thanks for the help. I let it run over night, but that didn't seem to help (didn't hurt it either). Do you know of any good techs in the Boston area? Also, exactly what are the meters reading? Are they connected directly to the output or are they connected to the tape head?

Thanks,

I just opened it up, cleaned out some of the circuits and poked around and that seemed to fix the problem. I think the connector from the LED's to the main board had gotten loose. Thanks for the help.
