Fostex external processing?

Hello Everyone

Here is my situation. I have a fostex vf160 which is great. I have currently purchased a Lexicon MXP-550 for effects, a M-Audio Tamps (well worth the wait), and a Ashly PEQ5771 (mono Parametric eq). All patched up with a Behr 3000 or something patchbay (i know about behr lets not go there). So last night I was playing around with some setting and found some problems.

First I connected my akg mic to the tampa, then to the Ashly, on to the Lexicon, then to the Fostex. I am getting good results but I would much rather take an unaffected siganl from the tampa into the fostex then add processing to that track. I tried doing this but was getting less the expected results. What i did was take the outputs of the fostex into my ashly eq and set the eq for to my prefrence. Then I recorded the out of the fostex thru the ashly on to channel 8 on the fostex but I did not get the sound I was presived to have when I was done tweaking the eq. I this the wrong way of doing external processing to tracks? Is the fostex not made for this type of application and I am stuck with what ever is in box? Or should I just selling everything I just got an ebay, and take up bars as a hobby.

Thanks

Recording to a mono track you will loose the stereo aspect of the Lex.
Connect the Lex using on of the Fostex's Aux outs to feed it, and returning the Lex outputs to two input channels on the Fostex.
I assume the tampa is a preamp, coonect it to the eq and the eq to the Fos input channel.
Next time, buy one piece of kit at a time!! :)
Good luck

Hello

Thanks for the info. So what if I already have a raw track layout without any processing except for the Tampa(pre-amp) and the eq. Can I use external effects on that track of would I have to retrack the track. I don't know if this is the right way of doing things but if possible I would like to retain and unprocessed track. Basically a track that has only passed through the Tampa. Then be able to go back and add effects and eq to the track. That way is something is not right later I don't have to go back an redo the track. I can just take the raw track and processes the track over again. I don't know if that is possible.

I did buy a kit at a time I was just waiting to try it all out at once. Plus the Tampa was on back order for like 3 months so by the time I got is the kit was a whole.

Well thanks for all the help

Emmanuel

Hook the AUX 1 or 2 output of the fostex into the the input of the Lexicon.
Then take the output or outputs of the lexicon and back in the fostex channels 1 - 8 (I would use channels 7 or 8 and plug into the insert jack one click. That will bybass the fostex pres)

Then set the aux send the channel of your raw track to pre or post and adjust the output level.

Yes you can add effects to tracks recorded without any effects. In fact that's how it's usually done, adding the effects returns to the mix as you mix down to stereo.
